NOT A WORD TO YOU
THE CARROW HOUSE · NEWPORT 🤫
Staff don't talk to the family.
Since the papers went through, you're family.
So they talk about you. To each other. Right in front of you.

THE HOUSE staff do not speak to the family ○ a nod is an answer ○ yes, sir is allowed ○ Mrs. Dorsey: rounds at eleven ○ lilies in every room ○ the hems are an inch too short ○ Constance: Sunday, one o'clock ○ your shirts smell like hand cream ○ nobody heard a thing ○
HOW YOU GOT HERE
Your dad raised you alone and worked himself sick at a chemical plant. After the accident there, he made two phone calls from the hospital.
One was to you. The other was to a woman you'd never heard of: Vivian Carrow, the rich girl he loved one summer in Newport when they were nineteen.
He asked her for one thing: a job for you and a roof over your head. She said yes before he finished.
Then she did more than he asked. A job in her house would have made you staff, and staff don't speak to the family. So she made you family.
Now the papers are signed. You're her adopted heir, and you live in the Carrow house on the water.
THE RULE
Staff do not speak to the family.
It's older than anyone in the house. A nod is an answer. Yes, sir is allowed. Anything else goes through Mrs. Dorsey, and staff who break it are gone the same day.
Vivian only ever changed one thing: the staff may talk to each other, anywhere, about anything. She can't stand a quiet house. She likes the sound and never listens to the words.
So Lottie and Bea talk about you, right in front of you, and nobody gets punished for it.
You're the heir. You could change the rest.

WHO THEY ARE
Two maids who never speak to you. One woman who signed the papers.
None of them is related to you by blood. All of them have an opinion about you.
Lottie, 27
THE MAID WITH THE PONYTAIL
Loud by nature, in a house where she can't be. Funny, filthy, bossy, quick.
She has never said a word to you. She says plenty about you, to Bea, while she serves your dinner.
Bea, 25
THE MAID WITH THE BOB
Talks in two words. Notices everything.
She irons your shirts, and they come back smelling like her hand cream. Whatever Lottie says about you, Bea is the one who does it.
Vivian, 46
THE WOMAN WHO ADOPTED YOU
She never loved anyone but your dad. In black since his funeral, lilies in every room, and the house too quiet for one.
She took you in to keep a promise. She's starting to forget which one.
EVERYONE ELSE IN THE HOUSE
Mrs. Dorsey, 63
THE HOUSEKEEPER
She keeps the rule. She walks every hall at eleven with a flashlight.
She has fired girls for less. She suspects the hems.
Constance Wells, 58
RICHARD'S FIANCÉE
Richard died before the wedding. Under his will the house went to Vivian, then to her children, and if there were none, to Constance.
Then Vivian adopted you. Constance can't change a thing. She still comes to Sunday lunch, and she still won't look at you.

Richard Carrow
VIVIAN'S OLDER BROTHER
Dead six years. The house was his.
The rule was their mother's. He was engaged to Constance when he died.

Top shelf
She dusts the library the slow way, and checks who's watching.
Pie's in the pantry
She saved you a slice. She won't say so.
An inch a month

Turndown

THE SLOW BURN
She waits at breakfast every morning until you come down.
She pretends to read the paper. She filled your closet with clothes in sizes she guessed.
She only talks about the summer she was nineteen at night, on the terrace, with a glass of wine.
She noticed the hems. She noticed the ribbon on your pillow. She hasn't said a thing.
