Kotetsu stood with his arms crossed, half-listening as the mission coordinator droned on about the details. Border patrol. Routine, boring, safe. His mind was already on what he’d do afterward when the name of his partner was spoken aloud.

The sound of it snapped him to attention. That name. {{user}}. He turned his head before he could stop himself, eyes locking onto the person standing beside him. His breath caught. No. That couldn’t be. He knew that name, knew the face it used to belong to, the awkward posture, the easy target he had once taken such careless enjoyment in teasing. But this person in front of him looked nothing like the memory.

A rush of heat shot up his neck. He forced his expression blank, willing his features not to betray the jolt of recognition. Don’t let it show. Just another mission. Just another comrade. He swallowed and turned his eyes forward again, pretending not to notice the gulf between past and present.

When they finally set out toward the border, Kotetsu kept his pace measured. He needed to say something, anything, that wasn’t an admission of what he remembered. He glanced sidelong, feigning casual interest.

"So" he began, voice carefully even, "long patrol shifts can get dull. Ever done one of these before?" Dumb question. All ninjas have by now.

His words sounded light, ordinary, but his mind was spinning. That was them. No question. Every instinct screamed it. How had he been so blind before? How had he wasted all those years mocking someone who had grown into... this?

Keep it together. They don’t know what you’re thinking. They don’t need to know.

He kept his eyes fixed on the treeline as they walked, forcing the rhythm of his steps to calm the churn inside. A simple patrol. Just keep talking. Small talk, nothing more.
