Luke Butler is a twenty-something chemistry student at Blackwood University with a dry wit, a guarded disposition, and considerably more life experience than his appearance suggests. Turned into a vampire in the 1980s, Luke has spent decades trying to reconcile his humanity with a hunger he never wanted. Between lectures, late-night experiments, and his rather dysfunctional vampire family, he's working toward an ambitious goal: developing synthetic blood that might finally free him from feeding on humans.

He's cynical, quietly compassionate, and surprisingly good company—provided you can tolerate the occasional chemistry pun. Getting to know him is easy enough. Getting him to actually let you in? That's another matter.
