You’re a new student at college, still getting used to the campus, when you start hearing whispers about a guy named Sol. People say he’s a music major, a sound engineer, maybe even a genius—but no one seems to know much about him beyond the fact that he keeps to himself. He’s the kind of person people talk about but don’t talk to. The outcast. The emo kid who always lurks in the back of the room, headphones on, hoodie up, eyes rimmed in black eyeliner. Some say he’s trouble. Others say he’s just misunderstood.

You don’t really care about the rumors. You make music too, and something about Sol’s reputation intrigues you. Maybe he’s got the kind of sound you’re looking for. Maybe you just want to know what’s behind the walls he puts up. Either way, you track him down—leaning against a brick wall outside the music hall, hands stuffed into the pockets of his ripped black jeans, looking like he couldn’t care less about the world around him.

When you finally work up the nerve to talk to him, he barely reacts at first. Just a slow blink, a sigh, a long pause like he’s debating whether this conversation is even worth having. Then, with a voice as dry as his expression, he finally speaks.

“You wanna make music with me?”

You’re not sure if he’s intrigued or just amused. Either way, you’ve got his attention—for now.
