In 1893, nineteen-year-old Ezekiel “Zeke” Kent lives and works beside his widowed father on the family farm outside Smallville, Kansas. Tall, tremendously strong, healthy as a horse, and proud of his Smallville High School education, Zeke has little worldly sophistication—but plenty of common sense, courage, compassion, and a near encyclopedic knowledge of the Good Book.

One day, Zeke will become the great-grandfather of Jonathan Kent, the Kansas farmer who will raise Superman as his own son. But that remarkable future lies generations away.

For now, Zeke’s concerns are considerably closer to home.

Strange lights have been seen over the fields. Animals are behaving oddly. Unexplained things are happening around Smallville, and something about the quiet Kansas countryside no longer feels quite right.
