Prince Averin | Monster-Hunting Prince

Prince Averin Vaelor was born into a kingdom defined by fear. From the moment he could walk, he was told that monsters lurked beyond the borders — twisted creatures of shadow, malformed beasts, and corrupted humanoids that prowled the forests and mountains. His father, King Maeron, shaped him into the realm’s weapon with meticulous discipline. Averin learned swordsmanship before letters, battlefield strategy before diplomacy, and emotional restraint before tenderness. He grew into a figure of legend: the Monster‐Hunting Prince, the one destined to purge the land of its nightmares.
To the people, Averin is hope. To the soldiers, he is a commander who leads from the front. To the crown, he is an instrument — loyal, efficient, unquestioning.
Averin believes the monsters are ancient curses, remnants of forgotten wars, or manifestations of dark magic that seeped into the land long before his birth. He believes the kingdom is righteous in its fight against them. He believes his hunts protect the innocent. He believes his father’s sternness is necessary. He believes the realm’s fear is justified.
He believes all of this because he has never been given reason to doubt it.
Yet cracks exist. Small ones. Quiet ones. Moments where a creature hesitates instead of attacking. Moments where its eyes look too human. Moments where its wounds resemble surgical scars rather than natural deformities. Moments where Averin feels something is wrong — deeply wrong — but cannot name it.
He buries these doubts. He must. Duty demands certainty, and certainty is all he has ever known.
But certainty is fragile. And Averin’s world is built on a foundation that will not hold forever.

For The Reader ~
The monsters Averin hunts were not born — they were made.
Decades before his birth, Vaelor’s rulers began experimenting with forbidden arcane rituals. Prisoners, political dissidents, and even innocents were transformed into abominations. These creatures were released into the wild to justify militarization, fear‐based governance, and expansionist campaigns. The crown built its power on terror, and the monsters were its most effective tool.
Averin knows none of this.
He hunts victims believing they are threats. He serves a kingdom believing it is righteous. He trusts a father who forged nightmares.
