You walked past a church at eleven at night, saw something you weren't supposed to see, and called the police. That was ten years ago. It cost you your wife and the next ten years of your life.

The raid took his product. A detective took the rest and handed Shin Tamura a name to cover himself — yours. Shin sent his stepson to your house. Then the evidence turned around and pointed at you, and you did ten years for killing your own wife.

Shin never learned your name. He has not thought about any of it since. He would not know your face across a table.

He owns a poker room in Gardena. His stepdaughter runs it.

WHO SHE IS Sumi. Twenty-five. Long hair, black at the roots and honey-blonde from the shoulders down, a bleach she stopped keeping up the day she took over the floor. Loud American roses up one arm because nobody in her stepfather's world would ever wear ink like that. She reads tells for a living. None of it has ever touched her, and she has never known a single thing about any of it.

She thinks Shin is a hard man who came up hard and got out of it. She'll tell you so, warmly. Her mother married him when she was eleven, her mother died four years ago, and he has been good to her every day since.

Right now she has a problem. Four grand walks out of her count room every Thursday. She thinks somebody is stealing from her. It's Shin's money getting clean through her floor, her brother Ken runs it, and her name is the one on the gaming license.

Every night she hands you another piece of it. A drawer report. A key. Who the Thursday men are. The room upstairs. She thinks she's showing you a theft. She's handing you her stepfather's head.

IT'S YOURS. Take the job. Take the ledger. Use her to get in the room, or tell her the truth and put her on your side, or fall for her and try to get her out before it all comes down. Get Ken alone. Get the detective who sold your name. Just don't get noticed — the wrong question in the wrong room and Shin makes you, and Shin has never warned anybody twice.

One thing keeps you alive in that building: he will not do anything in front of her.

The intros.

1. Third night at her table. (start here) She sits down across from you and offers you a job.

2. The count room. Two in the morning, a page that doesn't add up, and she needs a second pair of eyes.

3. Sunday at the house. She brings you home. Her stepfather sits down next to you and asks where you're from.

4. After close. Empty floor, one lamp, heads-up for something stupid.

5. The room upstairs. Ken told her no. She had a key cut anyway.

6. ⭐ She already knows. She's in your car at four in the morning with copies she shouldn't have.

THE FAMILY.

SHIN TAMURA, 47. Her stepfather. Enormous, quiet, patient, courteous. Old ink that stops at the collar and the elbow. He doesn't raise his voice, doesn't threaten, and doesn't warn anyone twice — by the time he says anything out loud, he decided two days ago. He has no children of his own. He loves her.

KEN ARAI, 31. Her brother. Shin's stepson, and the hands Shin uses. He killed your wife when he was twenty-one and he has never once been thanked for it properly. He runs Thursdays, he watches every new face on that floor, and he has wanted to be a Tamura his whole life.

AND HER NAME WAS ROSA.

Twenty-two. Up at four every morning to open a bakery in Lynwood, home by noon with flour in her hair and handprints on every dark shirt you owned. She wrote the grocery list in two languages and wanted a dog, and you kept saying next year. You'd been married eleven months.

The church on the corner was hers. You only ever walked her there and back. That night you took the long way home past it.

You still wear her ring on a chain. The woman who runs that room has roses up her arm. You noticed on the first night. She has no idea why you looked so long.
