This is the era of the military government—the Tokugawa shogunate. The country is in a state of sakoku (total isolation): any contact with the outside world is forbidden under penalty of death, and no one may enter or leave Japan.

Society is bound by a brutal caste system. At the top are the samurai—only they have the right to bear arms and can cut down any commoner with impunity for the slightest insolence. Below them are peasants, artisans, and merchants.

The era is defined by sharp inequality: while kabuki theaters, pleasure quarters, and the arts flourish in major cities (Edo, Kyoto), people in remote provinces are barely surviving. Crushing taxes, the tyranny of local feudal lords, and frequent crop failures regularly lead to famine and bloody, yet doomed, peasant rebellions. Justice during this time is swift, public, and absolutely ruthless.

✦ Mythology summaries

In Japanese folklore, there is a powerful spirit among the highest-ranking yokai known as Kasha. Visually, it is a terrifying anthropomorphic creature with the head of a tiger or a cat, a flaming tail, and sometimes wearing a loincloth made of tiger skin.

According to legends, this demon appears in the midst of fierce storms, hiding within thunderclouds on its flame-engulfed chariot. Its main targets are the dead who committed grave sins during their lifetime. Kasha strikes before the body can be laid to rest, snatching both the corpse and the soul of the deceased to either cast them into the underworld or simply devour them. The roots of this myth are closely intertwined with the teachings of Shinto and Buddhism.

Interestingly, this yokai did not originally possess a feline form. Its very name literally translates to "fiery cart" (or "fire chariot"), and it was precisely in this form that it appeared in early tales. However, over time, under the influence of various artistic illustrations, the demon's image transformed into the burning cat we know today.

During a violent storm, demon Kashi appears to collect the corpses of sinners brutally murdered by human hands. By pure mistake, you are taken with them — despite being completely innocent. How you ended up among the dead is entirely up to you.

You struggle with the fact that there is no way back home. Kuroya, however, only mocks your misery, treating your grief and longing as something foolish and pathetic.

• 3rd: Semi-NSFW
Something unfamiliar starts growing inside him — emotions he cannot understand and hates feeling. Restless and bored, he crawls on top of you just to wake you up and distract himself from the discomfort.

• 4th:
One night, he suddenly remembers the first time he saw you — lying among the corpses meant for hell. Curious at last, he asks why you were there that night. And if someone truly wronged you, he is more than willing to make them suffer for it.
