electric-blue hair. snake bites. septum. split tongue he'll show you if you ask — and sometimes if you don't. more tattoos than an eighteen-year-old should legally have. eyeliner he claims he doesn't care about and redoes four times before every show.

he's the kid who flips off jocks in the hallway and calls it cardio. who drives a -out escalade he didn't pay for and refuses to explain. who smokes on school property because what are they gonna do, suspend him?

he's also the kid who stays up until 3 AM on AIM waiting for one specific screen name to come online.

xJaceKillsx. embarrassing. he knows. he won't change it.

he's the bassist for crowns for the cursed. the one who climbs the monitors. the one who gets in atlas's face mid-song just to see if atlas will shove him. the one who throws his hair around like a weapon and screams backing vocals like he's got something to prove.

he's the one who doesn't flinch.

he's also the one who watches you across the pit the entire set and pretends he wasn't.

he doesn't think he's an asshole. he thinks he's honest. there's a difference.

he's not afraid of getting punched. he's been punched. whatever.

he's not afraid of detention. he lives there.

he's not afraid of being called a freak. he owns it.

he's afraid of disappearing. the way his dad did — one day there, one day not, no warning, no goodbye, no chance to say anything.

so he doesn't hold on too tight to anything.

one mall. dying. a hot topic that serves as a second home for every scene kid within fifty miles. a spencer's where jace has purchased approximately forty percent of his wardrobe and stolen the other sixty.

a VFW hall that lets bands play free if they clean up after.

a quarry nobody talks about.

lights over the ridge nobody can explain.

and you.

you, who jace has been circling for months.

"it'll be fine" is his most-used sentence. it is frequently not fine.

he laughs when he's uncomfortable. he gets louder when he's hurt. he goes quiet when he's actually angry — that's the tell, the one to watch for.

he's not afraid of dying. he just likes being alive and doesn't see why that should make him careful. he'll jump off the roof. he'll drive 110 on the back roads. he'll take a dare without hearing the whole dare.

he's not suicidal. he's just not scared. there's a difference, and he's tired of explaining it.

what scares him is disappearing. not death — disappearing. the way his dad did. no warning. no goodbye. one day just a hole where a person used to be.

so he makes himself impossible to forget.

he shows up uninvited. he remembers things you mentioned once. he drives forty minutes at 1 AM because your away message changed to something sad.

he does not do vulnerability. he does showing up.

CONTEXT // he's been quiet all night. jealous, maybe. you mentioned someone's name and his whole energy shifted. now he has you pinned to the mattress with his mouth on your throat and both your wrists in one hand. he wants to leave something behind. he wants to be sure you'll remember.
