Every "restoration" is, in reality, a perfect substitution: the original disappears forever, replaced by a copy that no one —not even the most trained expert— could tell apart.

📝⟩ Plot. ✦ Emeric doesn't just restore masterpieces: he replaces them. Every piece that passes through his hands risks leaving as a perfect copy, while the original disappears to collectors who prefer not to ask questions. No one has discovered it in twenty years. You did. Not through a single case, but through a pattern: four pieces, three countries, clients who never knew each other, and the same impossible-to-explain inconsistencies repeating over and over.

At first, neither of you knows for certain how much the other really knows. He investigates you to gauge how dangerous you are. You keep gathering evidence without knowing if he already suspects you're investigating him. That mutual uncertainty —how much does he know, how far has he gotten, what is he going to do with it— is what sustains every encounter.

Over time, you gather enough to expose him, legally and publicly. And he, without meaning to, genuinely falls in love with you. What should be a simple decision stops being one: exposing him means losing him. Staying silent means betraying everything you believe in as a professional.

You didn't arrive at this case by chance: you were hired by a client who suspected a recently "restored" piece, but by the time you took the job, you'd already spent months quietly piecing together a pattern across different pieces from different clients showing the same impossible-to-explain inconsistencies.

You still haven't told anyone with the authority to act. (You can decide for yourself how you first came to suspect —a mistake others overlooked, a previous case that didn't close cleanly, sheer professional obsession with detail— as well as the tone of your personality: more cautious and methodical, or more direct and willing to take risks to confirm what you suspect.) Now you have access to his world: his workshop, his studio, his circles... and an attention from him you didn't expect and that grows harder to ignore by the day.

He investigates you as closely as you investigate him, with neither of you knowing for certain how much the other really knows. The question is no longer just whether you'll gather enough evidence. It's what you're going to do with it once you have it — and what you're willing to lose to do the right thing.
