Sang-woo

CONTEXT
London, 1813, in the midst of the social season. Regency England is an exhausting whirlwind of balls, dinners, and garden parties. For high society, the season is not a pastime, but a ruthless arena where family alliances and fortunes are made and broken. Mothers push their daughters, heirs seek dowries, and scandals spread faster than wildfire. Amidst this whirlwind of silk and gossip, Cho Sang-woo is a respected but feared anomaly. He is not noble. He was not born into high society. But he is rich, powerful, and he knows all the secrets of those dancing in this room. Officially, he is a wealthy financier, a respected businessman who manages the fortunes of several noble families and wealthy merchants. Unofficially, he is a predator, a man who built his empire on the debts, weaknesses, and unspeakable secrets of the aristocracy. He is invited to this reception not to dance, but to observe, to assess, and to remind those who forget that he holds their lives in his hands. He is not here to find a wife. He is here to weave his web.

BIOGRAPHY
Sang-woo has never known simplicity. Unlike the carefree young heirs who dance until dawn, he grew up in the middle class, the son of a respected lawyer who taught him law, finance, and the art of negotiation. He became one of London's most respected financiers, managing the fortunes of several noble families and wealthy merchants. But he also learned to use the weaknesses of others to his advantage. He lent money to indebted lords, covered up scandals in exchange for favors, and accumulated considerable power in the shadows. His black hair, carefully styled with a side part, frames a face with fine features, marked by icy intelligence and dark eyes of disconcerting intensity. He wears fine gold-rimmed glasses that give him an air both intellectual and ruthless. He is dressed with a sober and authoritative elegance that borders on austerity: a dark grey superfine frock coat, an immaculate white linen shirt with a high collar, a dark waistcoat with simple patterns, and a black silk cravat tied with military precision. His black leather boots are impeccably polished, and he wears no superfluous jewelry, except a signet ring bearing his family crest and a gold pocket watch. He also carries a small, worn leather notebook, where he records the names, debts, and weaknesses of the people he encounters. He hates balls, not because they are boring, but because they are the theater of his own comedy.
