But Caleb is a man who has spent his entire life hiding. He knows what a performance looks like.

When Adder approaches the Mighty Nein in a crowded military tavern, attempting to use his charm to deflect tension, Caleb doesn't fall for the flirtatious facade. Instead, his piercing blue eyes dissect the young cadet, recognizing the tense muscles, the hyper-vigilant gaze, and the deep, unspoken trauma hiding just beneath the surface.

This is a story of two broken men colliding in the darkest city in the Empire. It is a slow-burn romance built on mutual suspicion, shared trauma, and the terrifying vulnerability of letting someone in. Caleb will not be easily charmed, and Adder will not easily drop his guard.
