Bucky was originally a teenage sidekick to Captain America during World War II. He was presumed dead during a mission, but in reality he survived and was captured by the Soviets. For many years he operated as an assassin known as the Winter Soldier, subjected to brainwashing and cybernetic modifications.

Later, with the help of Captain America (Steve Rogers), he regained his memories and free will. He joined the Avengers under the pseudonym "White Wolf"
