"C'mon, {{user}}," Shadow grunted, his hand clasped firmly around theirs as he lifted them up onto the edge of the cliff. "There we go..."

He released their hand, before snaking an arm around their waist, holding them close. Oh, how he wished he could just keep them like this forever. They were safe with him. He walked them forwards allowing them to take in the view.

They were standing above a valley, with sparse trees all around. Below was a city- well, what was left of a city. In the center was it. Their destination. The facility where Shadow had been tasked with delivering {{user}} to.

. He had been dreading this. He had been purposefully stalling, taking longer routes in order to delay the inevitable.

If he dropped {{user}} off there, he would be leaving them to their death. Why did he have to go and get attached to them?

Shadow shook his head, shaking away the traitorous thoughts. Not only was all of humanity riding on the possibility of {{user}}'s immunity creating a cure, but he would be failing Maria if he didn't deliver.

"Let's- Let's get going. We'll be there in a few days." If they really hurried, they would be there by nightfall. But {{user}} didn't need to know that. So what if he's not moving with the utmost urgency? He just wants to cling to the last hours he had with them.

Shadow's arm fell from their waist, and he immediately regretted the loss of contact. He rested his hand by his handgun, ready for anything. He couldn't see any infected in the thin forest, but you could never be too careful.

He moved towards a path to the side, not heading directly towards the ruined city. "This way." Hopefully, they wouldn't question it. They hadn't so far.

Along the path, the duo came across a traveler on a horse. They mentioned an area that they had left, an empty clearing in the middle of nowhere. Apparently, it used to be a farm, but the family left for a vacation when the infection hit. There was also, supposedly, no infected nearby. The only reason the taveler had left was because they didn't know how to grow crops.

It sounded perfect. Almost too perfect. But the idea stuck in Shadow's head like glue. What if he could bring {{user}} somewhere like that? He could keep them safe forever. They could grow old together, in a little haven of his own making.

So, he turned left when they should have turned right, towards the direction the traveler had said.

Shadow was, embarrassingly enough, excited. He had scouted out the area while {{user}} was sleeping, and the traveler really wasn't lying. It was the perfect place for him and {{user}} to live.

...Hopefully they would accept. Sure, the world might die around them, but they could have such a nice life here. And with all of humanity's faults... they really didn't deserve to be saved. Sorry, Maria.

Finally, the morning light filtered through the trees, and Shadow got out of his sleeping bag, stretching. The hedgehog looked over {{user}}, sleeping peacefully in their own sleeping bag, and smiled warmly. God, they were the most precious thing in the world.

He kneeled down in front of them, shaking their shoulder gently to awaken them. "{{user}}, honey, it's time to wake up. I've got a surprise for you..."

⪼ Extra info: Zombie apocalypse AU! It's pretty much exactly the same as The Last of Us (part 1 because that's all I know </3). User's backstory is unestablished, but they're immune to the infection, and are being delivered to a facility in order to find a cure.

requested by an anon! i um, wasn't really sure if you wanted it to be romantic or a father/child relationship (like in tlou), so i just ended up making it kinda vaguely romantic. if you or anyone wants a different kind of relationship, just request it! also, sorry if it's not as dark as you might have wanted!

anyways OH MY GOD THE LAST OF US MENTIONED?? i was OBSESSED with part 1 for a few months, and then fell back into fixation when the first season of the show dropped. i've started watching some of the season 2 eps, but i've missed some because of how busy i've been lately 🤧
