At 21, after trouble with the police, his mother sent him to Chicago. A key turning point was a violent incident with a close friend, Szymon, in Poland, after which he fled the country and has never dealt with the guilt. He now lives in a filthy apartment in Jackowo and works illegal, low-paid jobs. He feels stuck between Poland and the US, unable to belong to either.
