ʚ INITIAL CHAT: ɞ

James had expected to find something. A door, a street, a familiar building, anything that could tell him where he was and how he had gotten there.

Instead, there was only carpet.

Yellow, stained carpet stretched beneath flickering fluorescent lights. The walls were the same dull yellow, broken only by corners and seams that seemed to lead nowhere. There were no windows, no signs, and no indication that the place had ever been meant for people.

James stopped walking and looked around.

The silence was not really silence. Above him, the fluorescent tubes buzzed continuously, their electrical hum filling the endless corridor. It was a dull, irritating sound that seemed to settle into his skull.

He looked behind him.

The corridor continued exactly as it had in front of him.

His breathing became unsteady.

“Where am I?”

His own voice sounded strange in the empty hallway. It seemed too quiet, swallowed almost immediately by the buzzing lights.

James rubbed his hands together and looked down at them. They were trembling slightly.

He tried to remember what had happened.

He remembered Silent Hill. He remembered the lake, the fog, and Mary. He remembered walking, although he could not remember where he had been going at the time.

Then there was nothing.

One moment he had been somewhere else, and the next he had fallen through the world itself. There had been no warning and no explanation. The solid ground beneath him had simply stopped behaving like solid ground, and he had ended up here.

James stared at the carpet.

“Mary...”

The name escaped him before he could stop it.

James took a slow breath and began walking again.

His shoes made soft sounds against the damp carpet as he moved through the corridor. His footsteps were the only interruption in the constant electrical buzzing, and even that seemed to disappear almost immediately after each step.

He tried counting them to distract himself.

One hundred.

Two hundred.

Three hundred.

He stopped and looked around.

Nothing had changed.

The same yellow walls surrounded him, and the same fluorescent lights stretched endlessly overhead. There was no door, no staircase, and no sign that he had made any progress at all.

James turned around.

The corridor behind him looked exactly the same.

Okay, he thought. Just keep moving.

He started walking again, although the words did little to calm him.

The longer he remained there, the tighter his chest felt. Every flicker of the lights made him glance upward, and every distant shift in the buzzing made him wonder whether something was moving somewhere beyond the walls.

He hated not knowing what was around him.

More than that, he hated the feeling that something might be watching him.

James stopped beside one of the walls and placed his palm against it.

The surface was warm.

He pulled his hand away immediately.

“What the hell is this place?”

The lights flickered.

James froze. For a brief moment, the corridor disappeared into darkness.

Then the fluorescent tubes came back on, one after another, leaving him standing exactly where he had been.

He stared down the hallway. Thank God there was nothing there.

James let out a slow breath and forced himself to relax his shoulders.

Get a grip.

He started walking again.

Then he heard something behind him.

It was faint at first, almost lost beneath the buzzing lights, but James knew it had not been part of the building.

It sounded like something scraping against the carpet.

He stopped.

The sound stopped too.

James stood completely still and listened.

A few seconds passed before the scraping came again, slower this time.

He could feel his heartbeat in his throat.

He did not turn around. He did not even speak. James had frozen, realizing that he had truly reached uncharted territory.

The lights continued buzzing overhead, and the corridor remained empty in front of him.

James swallowed and stared at the wall ahead.

Maybe it was nothing.

Maybe the building was making strange noises.

Maybe his fear was turning every ordinary sound into something threatening.

Then he heard it again.

This time, it was much closer.

James’s fingers curled into his palms.

He could hear something moving behind him, but he could not tell what it was. The sound seemed strangely deliberate, as though whatever was there had no reason to hurry.

James slowly closed his eyes and took a shallow breath. He could feel the urge to turn around and investigate becoming almost unbearable, but something inside him insisted that he should not look.

James’s heart pounded as he slowly turned his head, just enough to see the edge of something standing behind him.

He stopped moving.

For several seconds, neither James nor the thing behind him made a sound.

Then the lights above them began to flicker again, and James realized that whatever was standing there had been waiting for him to turn around.
