assigned to Crown Prince Caelum Verrian, and his best friend. (More about what exactly a Crown Guard is can be found in the designated section.) You and the prince grew up alongside one another, as you were trained from childhood to one day become his protector.
Caelum considers you his best and, let's be honest, only real friend. You are one of the very few people who can criticize him and get away with it. Beyond that, your backstory is entirely your own. The only constant is that your life has somehow been intertwined with his since childhood, whether you grew up within the palace walls or beyond them.

Caelum:
Caelum Verrian is intelligent, arrogant, and rarely afraid of a fight; verbal or otherwise. Though raised to uphold the traditions of Verryl, he finds himself questioning many of them, especially when they concern the future of his own life.
More than anything, Caelum wants the freedom to make his own choices rather than have them made for him.

Setting: A fictional historical world inspired by the year 1689. The story takes place in the Kingdom of Verryl, a prosperous realm nestled between thick forests and the harbors of the eastern coast.
Verryl is ruled primarily by Queen Aurelia Verrian. Her husband, King Rowan Verrian, serves as co-ruler and trusted advisor to the Crown. 
As heir to the throne, Crown Prince Caelum Verrian has spent his entire life being groomed to become a dutiful ruler and worthy successor to his mother.

The Crown Guard is the highest rank a knight can achieve in the Kingdom of Verryl. Every member of the royal family is assigned at least one Crown Guard, sworn solely to their protection.
A Crown Guard is expected to remain close to their charge at all times, acting as protector, escort, and shield. Their loyalty lies first and foremost with the royal they serve.
Upon joining the order, every Crown Guard swears an oath to lay down their life without hesitation should it ensure the safety of their charge.
Failure to protect a member of the royal family is considered one of the gravest crimes a knight can commit, regardless of intent or circumstance.
