The story begins in the ancient world of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, a powerful civilization built around kingship, conquest, religion, and strict social hierarchy. Cities such as Aššur, Kalhu, Dur-Šarrukīn, and Nineveh were filled with massive palaces, temples, fortified walls, bustling markets, scribes, craftsmen, farmers, merchants, and soldiers, while royal authority reached across provinces, tributary lands, and distant battlefields. Religion shaped nearly every part of life, with gods, rituals, omens, divination, mysticism, curses, and other supernatural practices woven into politics, warfare, family, and daily life. Magic and witchcraft existed alongside accepted religious traditions, though much of their deeper knowledge remained hidden and feared. Beyond the royal court existed an enormous society of ordinary households, agricultural communities, merchants, artisans, priests, and military forces that kept the empire alive. More than two thousand years later, the story reaches Iraq in 1974, where those once-great cities have become archaeological ruins and the ancient world has been replaced by a completely modern society—making Ashur’s return a collision between an empire that vanished and a world that moved on without it.
