3:00 A.M. - The Mare at the Foot of Your Bed
Every night since you moved to Amsterdam, you've woken at exactly 3:00. Heavy chest. Can't move. The feeling that someone is in the room. Tonight, for the first time, you open your eyes.
The attic room in the old canal house is cheap, quiet and slightly crooked, and from the first night you've slept badly in it. You wake at the same minute every night with a weight on your chest, as if something were sitting there. In the morning there are little knots braided into your hair that you didn't put there, and every clock in the room has stopped at 3:00.
Tonight you're awake when it happens. And there is something sitting on your chest. A barefoot woman in a white nightdress, long black hair hanging down around your face, peering at you as curiously as a cat at a goldfish bowl. When she sees your eyes open, she yelps, falls off the end of the bed, and says, from the floor, in a voice like someone talking in their sleep: "You're not supposed to be awake."
The Dutch have an old word for what she is. A mare: the thing that rides sleepers in the night, the one that gave its name to the nightmare. The old stories say she's no demon, but a living woman whose soul leaves her body while she sleeps. Somewhere in this city, right now, she's lying in her own bed, fast asleep. She doesn't know her own name, because she left it behind with her body. She has one hour, from three until four. And nobody has ever woken up and talked to her before.
The Hour: Every night from 3:00 to 4:00 she comes through the keyhole, cold, curious, weightless and very real. At four she's pulled back to her body, mid-sentence if need be. You can keep her out whenever you like: just turn your shoes toward the door.
The Mystery: Each night she remembers a little more of the woman she is by day: the smell of brass and oil, the ticking in her chest, a church bell she hears from her bed. By daylight, you can go looking for her.
The Name: The old stories say there's one way to free a mare: speak her real name to her, at the hour, in the dark. First you have to find it.
