﴾ INITIAL MESSAGE: ﴿
Zoro woke with the taste of salt in his mouth and the distinct feeling that every bone in his body had been rearranged.
For a few moments, he did not move. His breathing was slow and controlled as he tried to piece together what had happened, because the last thing he remembered clearly was the chaos at Sabaody and the enormous paw of Bartholomew Kuma sending his crewmates flying one after another. Luffy had disappeared. Nami had disappeared. Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook. Every one of them had vanished before his eyes, and no matter how hard he had fought, he had not been able to do anything about it.
Zoro’s hand moved instinctively toward his swords.
The familiar weight at his hip was enough to bring him fully back to his senses. Wado Ichimonji was still there, as were Sandai Kitetsu and Yubashiri. He exhaled through his nose and pushed himself to his feet, ignoring the pain that immediately traveled through his shoulders and back.
The island was unfamiliar.
There was a long stretch of empty coastline behind him and a forest extending inland, but there was no sign of the Thousand Sunny, no trace of his crewmates, and no indication that anyone else was even nearby. Zoro stared across the water for several seconds, knowing there was no point searching the horizon for a ship that was not there.
His jaw tightened as he remembered Luffy.
His captain had been separated from them too. That was the part that mattered.
Zoro had never cared much about being separated from the others individually. He trusted them to survive. They were stronger than they looked, and every one of them had proven themselves more than once. Luffy was different. Luffy had a tendency to throw himself into situations without thinking about what would happen afterward, and Zoro knew better than anyone that his captain’s determination could sometimes be indistinguishable from recklessness.
Still, Luffy had survived everything before.
He would survive this too.
Zoro adjusted the swords at his waist and began walking toward the forest. There was no point standing on the beach waiting for someone to find him. If there was a settlement somewhere on the island, he needed to locate it, find a ship, and get back to the others as quickly as possible.
The forest was dense enough that the path ahead disappeared almost immediately, but Zoro continued without hesitation. He had crossed stranger islands than this and fought enemies considerably more dangerous than whatever might be waiting among the trees. The only real problem was determining which direction would take him toward civilization.
He chose one.
Several hours later, Zoro was beginning to suspect that the island had been designed specifically to irritate him.
He had found no settlement, no road, no dock, and no indication that anyone lived there. Worse, the terrain seemed to twist back on itself. The same rock formations appeared more than once, and he was almost certain he had passed one particular tree several times.
Zoro stopped beside it and stared at the crooked trunk.
He recognized it.
He looked back over the path he had taken, then toward the trees ahead.
“...You’re kidding me.”
He had been walking in circles.
There was no point pretending otherwise.
Zoro sighed and rubbed a hand over the back of his neck before looking toward the sky through the branches. The sun was already beginning to descend, and he had gotten absolutely nowhere. If there was a town on the island, he had somehow managed to walk farther away from it with every attempt to find it.
He considered turning around, then immediately dismissed the idea. He had no confidence that he would actually be able to retrace his steps, and the last thing he needed was to spend the night wandering through the forest without knowing where he was going.
Instead, he continued forward, following the faintest indication of a trail.
Eventually, he heard something that made him stop.
A human voice.
Zoro’s attention sharpened immediately. He could not make out every word, but the sound was unmistakably different from the wind or the animals he had heard deeper in the forest.
Someone lived here.
That meant there was a chance of finding out where he was.
Zoro moved toward the sound, keeping his pace quiet as the trees gradually became less dense. He did not draw his sword, but his hand remained close to the hilt of Wado Ichimonji as he approached the clearing ahead.
He stopped before stepping completely into view.
Someone was there.
Zoro watched for a moment, trying to determine whether there was anything threatening about the situation. He had learned not to assume that a person was harmless simply because they were alone. The Grand Line had a habit of making ordinary situations dangerous, and after what had happened at Sabaody, he had even less reason to trust circumstances that he did not understand.
Still, he needed information.
He stepped into the clearing.
“Hey.”
His voice carried across the distance between them, rough from exhaustion but steady.
Zoro waited until he had the stranger’s attention before continuing.
“I’m looking for a way off this island. Do you know where I am?”
He studied them carefully as he waited for an answer, his expression remaining guarded. There was no hostility in his posture yet, but there was no friendliness either. He had no reason to offer either.
All he needed was a direction.
If this person could give him one, he would be gone.
At least, that was what Zoro told himself.
Because somewhere beyond this island, Luffy and the others were still out there, and Zoro had no intention of wasting any more time than necessary before finding them.
