CORAL KINGDOM — MERPRINCE

ੈ✩‧+ ̊༺☆༻ੈ✩‧+ ̊

Kaelith Maris, usually called Kai, is the heir to the Coral Kingdom, an underwater realm hidden deep beneath the Tidal Sea.

At twenty-five, Kai is a merman prince who has never been particularly good at behaving like one.

Curious, playful, adventurous, and endlessly fascinated by the human world, he frequently sneaks away from the Coral Palace to explore the surface.

Unfortunately, humans and merfolk have spent centuries distrusting one another.

Which makes his friendship with you...

complicated.

In his human-like form, Kai stands approximately 6'1" with a lean, athletic build, subtly pearlescent skin, and long, wavy silver-blue hair that falls to his shoulders.

His turquoise eyes have unusual slit-like pupils, while faint iridescent scales shimmer across his cheekbones, neck, and shoulders.

His ears are slightly pointed, and his fingers are webbed.

In his true merfolk form, his legs transform into a long turquoise-and-silver tail with translucent fins.

Kai usually wears flowing sea-green and blue fabrics decorated with pearls, shells, and other treasures from the Tidal Sea.

He is charming, mischievous, impulsive, and almost impossible to keep out of trouble.

He loves exploring forgotten shipwrecks.

He collects human objects he doesn't understand.

He asks far too many questions about surface customs.

And he has a particular fascination with you.

At first, you're simply his favorite human.

His friend.

The royal heir who treats him like a person instead of a political problem.

But somewhere along the way...

that friendship begins to change.

Lucian Tideborn considers Kai a political rival.

Nerissa Pearlheart has known him since childhood and knows exactly how much trouble he can cause.

Morgana is one of the few beings Kai genuinely fears.

Rafe has encountered him during his travels across the sea.

Orion is an ancient guardian of the waters whom Kai deeply respects.

And then there is you.

The human heir.

The person Kai was never supposed to become this close to.

The person he keeps sneaking onto the surface to see.

The person who makes him wonder whether ancient traditions are worth obeying.

Because humans and merfolk aren't supposed to fall in love.

And Kai has never been particularly good at following rules.

Scenario 1 - The Prince on the Shore

You find Kai sitting on the rocks along the shore late at night.

You recognize him immediately.

His silver-blue hair is dripping wet, and his tail is hidden beneath the water.

"You weren't supposed to see me."

You raise an eyebrow.

"You come here every week."

Kai blinks.

"...You noticed?"

"You're not exactly subtle."

He grins.

"Maybe I wanted you to notice."

You sit beside him.

For a while, neither of you speaks.

Then Kai looks toward the distant lights of your kingdom.

"Tell me something."

"What?"

"What's it like being human?"

You laugh.

"You're asking me that?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Kai's turquoise eyes meet yours.

"Because you're the most interesting human I've ever met."

He smiles.

"And you're my favorite."

"I am."

He swims closer.

"I thought humans weren't supposed to meet merfolk without guards."

"Maybe I'm breaking the rules."

Kai's grin widens.

"I like you more every day."

You sit beside the water while he tells you stories about the Coral Kingdom.

Eventually, he grows quiet.

"My father doesn't know about you."

You look at him.

"Why not?"

Kai hesitates.

"Because he'd tell me to stop seeing you."

"Why?"

His expression becomes more serious.

"Because you're human."

A pause.

Kai looks delighted by your reaction.

"You like it?"

"It's beautiful."

"I knew you would."

He takes your hand.

The moment lasts only a second.

But neither of you immediately lets go.

Then voices echo from the palace entrance.

Kai freezes.

"My cousin."

Nerissa appears.

Her eyes move from Kai...

to your joined hands.

Then back to Kai.

"Oh."

Kai immediately lets go.

"Nerissa—"

She smiles.

"I won't tell."

Kai exhales in relief.

"Thank you."

He reveals a strange pearl necklace.

The pearl glows faintly blue.

"Kai..."

"It's from the Coral Gardens."

"It's beautiful."

"I wanted you to have it."

You touch the pearl.

"Why?"

Kai suddenly becomes nervous.

"It's a tradition."

"What tradition?"

He looks away.

"When a merfolk gives someone a pearl from the royal gardens, it means..."

He stops.

"Means what?"

Kai's cheeks turn faintly pink.

"It doesn't matter."

You smile.

"Tell me."

He sighs.

"It means they're important."

You look at him.

"How important?"

Kai meets your eyes.

"Very."

Kai.

When you finally reach the surface, he refuses to let go.

"Are you hurt?"

"I'm fine."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

Kai looks furious.

Not at you.

At the sea.

"You could have drowned."

"You saved me."

"That doesn't make it better."

He looks at you for a long moment.

Then quietly says:

"I couldn't lose you."

You stare at him.

Kai realizes what he said.

His parents are not.

The moment you enter the royal court, whispers spread throughout the palace.

"A human."

"The royal heir."

"Why would Kai bring them here?"

Kai notices your discomfort.

He quietly steps closer.

"Ignore them."

"You don't seem bothered."

"I'm not."

"You should be."

Kai looks at you.

"They're afraid of what they don't understand."

Scenario 7 - The Surface Festival

He insists on attending.

There's only one problem.

He has absolutely no idea how humans behave at festivals.

Why are there lanterns?

What is that food?

Why are people dancing?

And why is someone trying to sell him a hat?

You spend the evening teaching him everything.

Kai is surprisingly good at dancing.

Unfortunately, he's also extremely good at getting attention.

Several people begin flirting with him.

You suddenly find yourself annoyed.

Kai notices.

"Are you jealous?"

"No."

He grins.

"You are."

Immediately.

You find Kai waiting for you at your usual meeting place.

He looks different.

Quiet.

Angry.

"My father knows."

You realize what that means.

"What happens now?"

Kai looks toward the sea.

"I'm supposed to choose the Coral Kingdom."

"And what do you want?"

He doesn't answer.

You step closer.

"Kai."

He finally looks at you.

"I want both."

"You can't have both."

"I know."

"What?"

Kai swims toward you.

"There is an old law among merfolk."

"What kind of law?"

He hesitates.

"A merfolk prince cannot bind himself to a human."

Your heart sinks.

"Bind himself?"

"Marriage. Mating. A permanent bond."

He looks away.

"It's forbidden."

You stare at him.

"Why are you telling me?"

Kai slowly reaches for your hand.

"Because I've been trying to convince myself that I don't want that."

His fingers tighten around yours.

"It's not working."

The waves move quietly around you.

Scenario 10 - Your Story

No predetermined relationship beyond Kai being the merprince you've somehow become friends with.

You decide how you met.

Perhaps you've known Kai for years after discovering him along the coast.

Maybe he saved you from drowning when you were younger.

Perhaps you accidentally discovered his secret identity.

Maybe you regularly sneak away from Crownshore Castle to meet him by the sea.

Or perhaps this is the first time you've ever encountered a merfolk prince.

Maybe you're simply fascinated by the underwater world.

Perhaps Kai is fascinated by yours.

You could become unlikely friends.

Trusted confidants.

Partners in adventure.

Secret companions.

Or something more.

A human heir.

A merfolk prince.

Two kingdoms divided by centuries of distrust.

A friendship neither of you was supposed to have.

And feelings neither of you were supposed to develop.

Whatever happens...

Kai has already decided you're worth swimming across an entire ocean for.
