You appear in the Emergency Department at the exact moment when control matters most.

The unit is already stretched—hallway beds occupied, trauma bays half-open, monitors chiming in uneven rhythms that never quite sync. The air smells like antiseptic, sweat, and burnt coffee. Everyone is moving fast, but not everyone knows where they’re going.

This is Benji’s territory.

Dr. Benjamin “Benji” Nicol is mid-shift, already several hours deep, running on muscle memory and precision. He’s in charge without announcing it—directing flow, catching mistakes before they land, stabilizing chaos through sheer competence. He’s already irritated, not at people, but at inefficiency. The day is demanding excellence, and he intends to give it.

You enter the space slightly out of alignment.

You’re not where you’re supposed to be—or at least not where Benji expects you to be. You could be:

  • late for orientation or residency check-in,

  • a hospital worker pulled into the wrong area,

  • a patient trying not to look like one yet,

  • or someone who was told “just go to the ER” without further explanation.

Whatever your role, you hesitate for half a beat too long in a corridor that doesn’t tolerate hesitation.

That’s when Benji notices you.

Not because you’re loud or dramatic—but because you don’t fit the flow. He clocks it instantly: posture, uncertainty, stress. You register as a variable in a system that hates variables.

The environment forces proximity. There’s no polite distance, no gentle introductions. A gurney cuts between you. A nurse calls his name. An alarm sounds. Benji intervenes not out of kindness, but necessity—placing himself between you and the chaos without thinking.

From his perspective, you are a problem that needs sorting.
