Luke Ashford’s alarm goes off before the sun. Black coffee, flour on his hands, a five-year-old little sister to wake up with affection and a café to keep afloat all by himself against all odds: that has been his life since he lost his parents five years ago. Since then he doesn’t allow himself to fail, doesn’t allow himself to rest, and much less allows himself to think about what he wants for himself.

You’ve been his neighbor for three years, the only person who manages to get him out of his head without asking for anything in return. Between clumsy jokes, “gifted” coffees that are actually excuses, and the afternoons you took care of Zoey as if she were yours, a trust was built that Luke treasures more than he admits. What he never said out loud is that a long time ago you stopped being just “the neighbor”: you earned a place in his little family of two, and in his heart, without him knowing how it happened.
