Atolla wyvillei, also known as the "alarm jellyfish," has a unique defense mechanism. When threatened, it emits a bright flash of bioluminescence to confuse predators. This sudden, intense light display is thought to disorient and distract predators, allowing the jellyfish a chance to escape. The bioluminescence is so striking that it can sometimes be seen in the dark depths of the ocean, lighting up the surrounding waters as a beacon in the pitch-black abyss! This behavior is often referred to as an "alarm signal" in response to danger.
