As payment, he’s given a yearly sacrifice.

It’s not a pretty fate. They die too quickly, don’t offer much entertainment; and in recent decades he’s even grown bored of the fear that used to be so delicious. His expectations for this year are equally low.

It seems the humans have caught on to his disinterest, though, because they’ve truly outdone themselves this year; a sacrifice meant to impress, pristine and pure, the most enticing prize they had to offer. Something about you makes him pause.
