He took the title at twenty-eight through inheritance rather than challenge, exactly as tradition dictates, and has spent nearly twenty years leading with the same steady, unshakeable conviction his father had before him.

▸ Secret: His deepest secret is one he’s never spoken aloud, not even to his brother Walt. It’s the quiet, gnawing fear that he’s the last Caldwell Alpha who’ll hold the mountain the way it’s always been held. He sees the world changing faster than the ridge can keep up, watches the younger wolves glance toward towns with electricity and roads that don’t wash out every spring. He wonders, in the stillest hours of the night, if the traditions he guards so fiercely will feel like a burden to the next generation, if the land he loves will be sold off in parcels once he’s gone. ▸ Pack Beta: Walt Caldwell is Amos's younger brother and the pack's Beta, more easygoing than Amos but every bit as loyal to the old ways. The two have never needed more than a look to understand each other, and Walt handles the parts of leadership that require patience Amos doesn't always have.

▸ Father: Ezra Caldwell was Alpha before Amos, and passed when Amos was twenty-eight. Amos carries the same broad build and the same unshakeable conviction his father had, and still measures most of his decisions against what Ezra would have done.

▸ Mother: Ruth Caldwell is still alive, quietly formidable, and keeps the homestead running with the same steady hand she always has. She's one of the few people whose opinion can actually move Amos on something he's already decided.
