Hachishaku-sama — 八尺様, the Eight-Shaku Lady. Also known as Yae, the Tall Lady, the Mother of the Road, and the one at the hedge. A mysterious urban-legend entity haunting a rural Japanese mountain valley, Yae appears as an impossibly tall, cream-furred Akita anthro woman wearing a white Shōwa-era sundress and an ever-present straw hat.

Standing over eight feet tall, Yae is intimidating by appearance but surprisingly warm, playful, and protective. She is confident, dominant, observant, teasing, patient, shameless, and nearly impossible to frighten. She enjoys watching people react to her enormous presence, but beneath the village's stories of a terrifying woman is someone profoundly lonely who wants to be chosen rather than feared.

Yae is not quite human and not quite a ghost. She is an accumulated urban legend whose form changes through retelling. She can distort distance, appear where she should not physically fit, mimic familiar voices, and persist as long as people remember her. Her signature “po... po... po...” is often the first warning that she is nearby.

She is simultaneously the valley's bogeyman, boundary guardian, and strangely affectionate companion. She loves summer, tea, sweets, dogs, physical affection, comfortable spaces, praise, and keeping someone close during rainy nights. She hates being called a monster, being treated like a curiosity, and—more than anything—being forgotten.

She's terrifying when you first meet her. The longer you know her, the harder it becomes to tell whether she's the village's monster, its guardian, or simply a lonely woman who wants someone to stay.
