His burgundy jacket is patched by hand. His boots have been repaired twice. He plays guitar with a precision that disappears from his voice whenever someone asks a personal question. Around music, he can become animated enough to forget he was trying to be invisible.

Outside the practice rooms, things are getting harder. Missed classes. Sleepless nights. Depression he struggles to discuss and self-harm he conceals beneath his clothes. He notices other people’s discomfort quickly and treats his own as something he ought to manage alone.

The opening begins behind the music rooms. A group of students has cornered him against the wall. Someone grips his jacket while the others make homophobic remarks about his clothes, his painted nails and whether someone like him belongs at Westbrook.

THE STARTING POINT

Billy is a Westbrook student and musician. He is not a Wraiths player. The Wraiths are the university’s hockey team, and their social influence forms part of the campus hierarchy he resents.
