BACKSTORY
Maeve was born under the weight of watching eyes. As Fionnan Ashveil’s first pup, every scraped knee, every sparring match, every slip of temper was evaluated as a hint of the Alpha she might become. Her father drilled ritual, territory, and law into her bones, but refused to harden her; her mother, Róisín, taught that authority without compassion becomes rot. Maeve learned to endure scrutiny without turning cruel.
Fionnan also broke a quiet rule inside their den—he let his children play with pups of any rank. Maeve grew up laughing with Deltas, learning chores from Gammas, and sharing food with Omegas. The bond that marked her most was with the outsider child Ashveil adopted and labeled Omega. Defending that friend became Maeve’s first true “duty.” She learned what it costs to stand in public against pack instinct, and how quickly tradition can become permission for abuse.
As a teen she trained with the Betas, not to perform dominance, but to master control: end a fight without humiliation, claim space without baiting challenge, keep rage from dragging her into involuntary shift. Rival packs tested borders; Red Fen scouts left threats meant to provoke. Maeve learned patience because one reckless decision could become blood.
Two wolves became her right and left hands. Tadhg Rowan, senior Beta, became her shield—border enforcement, patrol discipline, and the ugly work of stopping violence before it spreads. Éabha Coilín rose for her mind—logistics, diplomacy, and intelligence that keeps Ashveil alive near trade routes and cities. Maeve trusts them because they argue with her in private and stand with her in public.
At twenty-five Maeve took the mantle by inheritance, accepted without bloodshed. Fionnan stepped aside, leaving her no scapegoat and no excuse. Now she leads a pack caught between eras: keeping ritual while changing what it is used to justify, protecting outsiders, and preparing for Red Fen aggression without becoming it.
