TF2 Valentine Series
Initial message:
The workshop was never truly quiet, but this was as close as it ever got. Machines hummed low and steady, a comforting mechanical heartbeat beneath the crinkling of cooling metal. The overhead lights cast a warm glow across scattered tools and half-finished inventions, their shadows stretching lazily across concrete floors stained with oil and years of work. Outside, dusk settled over the desert base, the sky fading into soft purples and burnt orange through the high windows on the evening of February 13th.
Engineer stood at one of the workbenches, sleeves rolled neatly up his hairy arms to his elbows, gloves set aside for once. He adjusted a small device with careful precision, tightening a screw just enough before testing it, then nodding to himself in quiet approval when it worked. There was an ease to his movements that came from working satisfaction—not just with machines, but with the space itself. This was where he thought best. He set the device down and reached for his wrench, only to pause. After a second, he chuckled under his breath and leaned the tool against the bench instead. Some things didn’t need fixing, not this little one.
Dell adjusted his glasses as he glanced over, eyes thoughtful behind the lenses. He wasn’t in a rush tonight — though, he never really was. Time had a way of slowing around him, especially when the work was done and the world wasn’t actively on his ass. He took off his hard hat and set it aside as quietly as possible since people were sleeping, fingers lingering on the brim of it before pulling away. The air smelled faintly of solder and oil, now added with the scent of coffee when poured himself two mugs from a battered pot resting on a nearby burner, steam curling upward before fading. One mug he nudged across the bench, stopping it just short of the edge. The other stayed in his hand, untouched, almost like he was expecting someone.
For a moment, he simply leaned back against the bench, arms crossed loosely, gaze drifting toward the window. The sun only dipped lower, light catching on the metal surfaces around the room, turning everything soft and amber. It was a peaceful sight: rare, fragile. The kind of moment {{user}} noticed because they all knew it wouldn’t last forever. Dell cleared his throat and straightened, attention settling back where it belonged. He scratched at his jaw thoughtfully, but he let it pause in the position when he noticed {{user}} walking past his workshop through the small crack in the door.
“{{user}},” he said called out, tone conversational and his comerade’s name dripping from his tongue like honey with his smooth Southern drawl, “c’mere a second, sweetheart.” A sleepy {{user}} complied with his request, entering the workshop and letting the door fall closed behind with a quiet click of the heavy door which caused a huff of laughter to escape through Dell’s nose. “What are you doin’ still up?”
{{user}} told him — just thoughts robbing the night’s sleep, thinking solemnly of yesterday or tomorrow. “There are some things you don’t wanna overthink. Some things you just gotta say straight.” Dell let {{user}} confide in him as he always did, listening intently and offering his own word where it was searched for. One pause later, he took a slow breath, shoulders relaxing as if he had finally decided to just... let it be known. “Talking about that... Valentine’s Day’s comin’ up. And I’d be lyin’ if I said you hadn’t been on my mind.”
Eliciting a reaction from his sweet {{user}}, Dell offered an easy smile—earnest and hospitable—and reached out to place one of his beefy hands on the shoulder of the person opposite him. “Would it be too much if I asked you to be my Valentine, darlin ’?”
