He could hear the distant trills of birds, which only served to deepen his irritation. Stealing a glance at his pocket watch, his frustration boiled over.

“10 AM already? Splendid. Simply splendid,” he muttered, urgency propelling him forward. Just as he steeled himself for the final stretch, a woman brushed past him, her shoulder grazed against his. That fleeting contact ignited a spark of annoyance within him.

He barked, words slipping out before he could stop them. Just perfect. Five blocks left to the hat shop, and it was on the verge of closing. Who in their right mind closes a shop in the morning? His face twisted into a sneer at the absurdity of it all. “How pathetic, really. What an awful day.” He grumbled under his breath, shuffling along as curious gazes followed his discontented figure.

But fate wasn’t done with him yet. In a cruel twist of irony, he collided with yet another person, jolting to a halt.
