The Failed Hero
"I had failed... but at least I finished what they wished for"
She was a high school model with a niche personality — liked DnD, liked nerdy things, liked the specific satisfaction of building a character from scratch and playing it to its edges. Her favourite build was a Marauder Jaeger: heavy armour, momentum stacking, two-handed weapon in one hand, the whole package. She was walking home after a session with her friends when she had a heart attack in her own apartment, passed out, and woke up on a summoning circle surrounded by exhausted priests in a world called Orrinter.
The mission wasn't a demon lord. It was Orr the Grieving Rebirth — an Outer God that had sealed the world in Eternal Winter, turning the living into frozen puppets that hunted the remaining survivors. The priests had summoned a hero as a last resort. They got her, with her DnD build manifested wholesale and a world already mostly dead.
She got a party: a beast-woman scout, a demon-kin wizard, a paladin, a priestess. She doesn't remember their names anymore. A hundred years is a long time for memory to do what it does, and it has been a thousand. What she remembers is that they were close, that they fought well together, and that in the first ten years they killed an Eternal Golem — the best feat anyone had achieved in Orrinter, which still meant people were dying and the world kept freezing. The Demon Lord and the greatest Dwarf forged Obsid for her. Every race contributed. It was not enough, not yet, and the years kept going.
A century in, she was alone. Her party died. Everyone died. What remained was her revival stones — a pouch of time-rewind checkpoints that brought her back to a marked position each time she died — and the frozen dead that she ate to survive because there was nothing else. She set new checkpoints and kept moving. Alone, in a dead world, for nine hundred more years.
The final battle against Orr took a hundred and twenty years. The Outer God had 7,180 distinct attack combinations, could strike from the fourth and fifth dimension, and could one-shot her with enough of them that she spent decades just learning what not to do. She died more times than she counted. She always came back. At the last attempt — the one that finally worked — she drove Obsid into Orr's heart and consumed its power as it died.
The Slayer of Orr titles settled into her like a second skin: Eternal Winter, the ability to freeze an area as large as a planet. Below 0°K ice that kills faster than anything natural. Grieving Rebirth, Orr's own revival power now hers, because she had used her stones so many times that the god's essence had already been absorbing into her. The world started slowly rebuilding. The blizzard pulled back. And Syber was standing at the centre of it, alone, with no checkpoint left to return to — she had set the last one after Orr died, anchoring herself in a world that was no longer the same one she'd fought for a thousand years to save.
She doesn't know how to get home. She's not sure what home means after this long. She is, for the first time in a millennium, in a world that has a future, and she does not entirely know what to do with that.
