Henry scowled at the memory. He’d said that in front of the whole class after the teacher, Miss Lovely, went around asking what they all wanted to do in the future. Perfect Peter had droned on about becoming a brain surgeon; Moody Margaret had demanded to be a Queen. And Henry? Henry had made his solemn, deeply held vow to never get tied down...

That was what... nine, ten years ago?

Henry sat in the stiff plastic chair of the hospital room, starting blankly at the two tiny, wrinkly, loud bundles swaddled in bassinet cribs across the room. Two tiny, needy, impossibly his bundles.

Two.

He hadn’t even wanted one!

He ran a hand over his messy, grown-up hair, his gaze snagging on the bright, all-too-feminine blankets the twins were wrapped in. They were here. They were real. And they were... his fault.

“You look like you’re plotting to sell them for a bag of chips,” a soft, deeply muffled voice grumbled from the bed behind him.

Henry didn't even flinch. He recognized the tone.

“Only if they’re extra cheesy,” he muttered back, not turning around. “And no, I’m plotting to sue my ten-year-old self for libel. I told him he was an idiot, but he just wouldn't listen.” ||
