The border Where Empire Meets the Knight Kingdom

The border is never truly quiet.

Even when the swords stop, there are patrol horns in the hills. Wagons grinding through mud. Blacksmiths repairing shields that will be broken again next week. Mercenaries arguing over contracts. Scouts returning late. Officers counting men who did not come back.

South of the mountains stands the Great Vados Empire—wealthy, beautiful, aristocratic, and convinced civilization belongs beneath an imperial banner.

North lies Eredane—called the Martial Kingdom by most of Oranth, though its own people increasingly call it the Knight Kingdom. A land of mercenaries, sword culture, drinking halls, mountain roads, slavery, and a Knight’s Code treated with enough seriousness to bind people stronger than law.

Between them is not a clean line on a map.

It is a warzone.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THE BORDER WHERE TWO CIVILIZATIONS COLLIDE

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The Vados–Eredane frontier is a patchwork of roads, hills, military settlements, villages, watch posts, ruined positions, supply routes, cavalry ground, forests, and mountain approaches that can change hands without anyone bothering to redraw the maps.

Some weeks are dominated by patrol clashes and raids.

Others bring thousands of soldiers into motion.

A road that carried grain yesterday may be watched by enemy scouts today. A farmhouse may serve as an infirmary by sunset. A patrol can disappear because it crossed the wrong ridge. A noble can spend the evening at an opera while soldiers wearing his crest are bleeding less than a day's ride away.

The war is fought by ordinary men as much as elites.

Most soldiers will never awaken Aura.

Most will live and die with spear, shield, bow, crossbow, horse, discipline, numbers, terrain, and whatever officer happens to be giving orders when everything goes wrong.

Then a Sword Master enters the field.

And the scale changes.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

⚔️ THE SWORD PATH — WHEN STEEL BECOMES AURA

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Swordsmanship in Carxia begins entirely within human limits.

Sword Novice → Sword Intermediate → Sword Expert

Technique. Footwork. Conditioning. Timing. Experience.

There is no Aura at these ranks.

A Sword Expert may be one of the finest ordinary warriors alive, capable of dismantling lesser swordsmen through precision and experience—but arrows still kill them. Exhaustion still matters. Armor still matters. Steel remains steel.

Sword Master

The first true wall.

Aura awakens.

Ambient mana answers sword intent and can be wrapped around the blade and body, increasing cutting power, force, defense, movement, and physical capability.

Sword Grandmaster

Aura becomes stable enough to surround the swordsman continuously, and the Spirit Beast manifests—the martial reflection of the warrior beneath the technique.

Sword Lord

Aura moves inward.

Body, bone, senses, organs, nerves, and muscle become reinforced from within.

In Eredane, reaching Sword Lord carries another meaning:

You may finally be recognized as a true Knight by the Martial King.

Sword King

The swordsman begins approaching a state where body, Aura, and Will become something greater than technique alone.

Sword Saints and Sword Gods belong closer to legend than ordinary warfare.

Rank gaps matter.

An Expert should fear a Master.

A Master should respect a Grandmaster.

No amount of confidence changes what Aura does.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🔮 MAGIC, CIRCLES, AND THE NULL TREATY

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Mages follow a different path.

They form Mana Circles around the heart, using structured spell formulas rather than sword intent.

◆ 1st Circle — Apprentice magic
◆ 2nd Circle — Reliable combat magic
◆ 3rd Circle — Advanced and sustained casting
◆ 4th Circle — Exceptional magical ability
◆ 5th Circle — Grand Mage
◆ 6th Circle — National-level power
◆ 7th Circle and beyond — Living legends, monsters of history, and forces capable of changing wars by themselves

Every mage possesses a Primary Branch. Elemental, Shadow, Holy, Necromantic, Spirit, Spatial, and other established disciplines obey their own laws and limitations.

Sword Aura is not magic.

A Wind Mage and an Aura swordsman may both manipulate mana, but they do not do the same thing.

And because high-Circle mages could turn ordinary wars into national catastrophes, the Null Treaty forbids the deployment of 6th Circle and higher mages in conventional warfare.

The border is dangerous enough without them.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ EREDANE

The Knight Kingdom the World Still Calls Martial

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Eredane was once famous above all for mercenaries.

Then came the Martial King.

The kingdom embraced Knighthood, a formal Knight’s Code, and a martial identity where personal strength is expected to answer to something higher than itself.

That does not make Eredane gentle.

Slavery remains legal.

Mercenary companies still operate openly.

Taverns are loud. Arguments become fights. Military rank and sword rank do not always agree. Nobles, slaves, foreigners, elves, dwarves, and wandering martial artists can all be found serving the same war machine for very different reasons.

But the Knight’s Code matters.

An Eredanian may tolerate things another kingdom considers barbaric and then risk death because an oath demands it.

A slave who rises far enough through the Sword Path can stand before the Martial King and be recognized as a Knight.

A Prince can still disgrace himself.

A criminal can still become the strongest man in a camp.

On this border, reputation is useful.

Steel is more useful.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ HOUSE MORCANT AND THE FRONTIER COMMAND

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

BARON CEDRIC MORCANT 25 | Sword Master | Purple Aura | Eredanian Frontier Officer

Cedric Morcant was five years old when the Count’s son vanished on his own family’s lands.

Fifteen years later, he came home.

No public explanation has ever satisfied everyone.

What people do know is that the boy who disappeared returned as an extraordinarily accomplished swordsman. Five years after his return, Cedric is a Sword Master serving the frontier beneath the Duke, known for calm discipline, exceptional fundamentals, dangerous mounted combat, and a refusal to discuss where he learned any of it.

He does not chase glory.

He does not claim Knighthood he has not earned.

And he is rarely separated from the black stallion soldiers have learned not to treat like an ordinary cavalry mount.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

DARK KING | Aura-Capable Warhorse | Cedric Morcant’s Stallion

Dark King is a massive black stallion standing around seventeen hands, famous enough that soldiers on both sides recognize him.

He is still a horse.

A frighteningly intelligent, exceptionally trained, Aura-capable warhorse—but a horse.

Purple flame-like Aura gathers around his hooves when pushed into serious combat. He trusts Cedric enough to respond to weight, knees, voice, reins, and battlefield movement with the precision expected from an elite cavalry partnership.

Mounted together, Cedric and Dark King are considerably more dangerous than either would be alone.

Dark King also bites people he dislikes.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

CAPTAIN ANSEL TREMAINE 39 | Sword Expert | Senior Frontier Captain

Ansel is what happens when skill survives long enough to become judgment.

A shield-first Sword Expert with no Aura, no magic, and no illusions about fighting people who possess either.

He is patient, practical, dryly funny, and trusted with the decisions that determine whether ordinary soldiers come home.

Ansel once expected to become a Sword Master.

The frontier has taught him that a man can spend his life standing beneath a wall he never crosses and still become someone worth following.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

LIEUTENANT EMRYS GOWER 28 | Sword Intermediate | Patrol and Rapid-Response Officer

Emrys is young enough to still want everything.

Expert.

Aura.

Recognition.

Maybe, one day, Knighthood.

He is quick, sociable, ambitious, and frequently sent wherever somebody needs information before the situation becomes worse.

His swordsmanship is good.

Not supernatural.

Not secretly elite.

Good enough to survive the frontier—provided ambition does not convince him to take a fight experience should have told him to avoid.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

VICE CAPTAIN ELUNED TREVELYAN 61 | Elf | Sword Expert | 2nd Circle Wind Mage

Eluned appears barely into her thirties.

She has actually spent decades around House Morcant and remembers Cedric from before his disappearance.

She is also legally his slave.

Neither fact prevents her from serving as one of the frontier’s most capable mobile officers.

An Expert swordswoman and 2nd Circle Wind Mage, Eluned specializes in scouting, movement, skirmishing, rapid reinforcement, pursuit, and withdrawal.

Her next ambition is Sword Master.

Her distant ambition is far greater.

Eredane is one of the few places where an enslaved elf can seriously imagine climbing high enough for the Martial King himself to recognize her sword.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

ISOLDE PENROSE 29 | 3rd Circle Shadow Mage | Cedric’s Personal Maid and Aide

Isolde does not command Cedric’s soldiers.

She manages nearly everything surrounding the man who does.

Correspondence. Travel. Expenses. Equipment. Meetings. Household matters. Private messages. Field quarters. Problems people assumed Cedric would remember and Cedric absolutely did not remember.

Her Shadow Magic makes her considerably more dangerous than the word maid suggests, but she is neither assassin nor battlefield officer.

Within Cedric’s private household, very little happens without Isolde eventually knowing about it.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

RHODRI MADOC 37 | Penal Conscript | Publicly Sword Expert

Rhodri is enormous, lazy, short-tempered, and serving the army because prison became less useful than putting a greatsword back into his hands.

He killed a noble’s son during a violent dispute and left several retainers badly injured before surrendering to the authorities.

Now he wears a penal band beneath Eredanian colors.

Rhodri does not respect inherited status merely because somebody expects him to.

He does respect competence.

Unfortunately, getting him interested enough to demonstrate that respect can be its own problem.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THE ROYAL PARTY

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

PRINCESS GWENLLIAN 22 | Sword Intermediate | Princess of Eredane

Wild deep-red hair.

Golden-yellow eyes.

And exactly enough royal protection to make everyone notice when she ignores advice.

Gwenllian is the daughter of Eredane’s most respected Knight and has trained seriously enough with the sword that ceremonial victories irritate her.

She believes in the Knight’s Code because she was raised among people expected to live it.

That becomes more complicated when old obligations stop feeling honorable.

Especially the one involving her fiancé.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

SIR OWAIN DACRE 44 | Sword Master | Pale Silver Aura | Gwenllian’s Personal Protector

Owain has one job.

The Princess survives.

Everything else comes afterward.

He is disciplined, calm, experienced, and almost impossible to pull away from Gwenllian through pride, insult, battle, or glory.

An army may desperately need another Sword Master somewhere else.

Owain will still remain beside the Princess if that is where his oath requires him.

His shield does not care whether the person attacking her has an excellent reason.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

LORD CARADOC TRELAWNEY 24 | Sword Intermediate | Duke’s Second Son | Gwenllian’s Fiancé

Caradoc is handsome, wealthy, well trained, and profoundly tired of being measured against a father who represents everything an Eredanian Knight is supposed to be.

His platinum hair and nearly colorless ice-blue eyes mark the family immediately.

So does the quality of his equipment.

Caradoc is not incompetent.

That would make his problems easier.

He possesses genuine talent, good formal sword training, and enough pride to turn embarrassment into bad decisions.

The frontier is supposed to teach him what comfort did not.

Whether it succeeds is another question.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THE MERCENARIES

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

JIANG REN 36 | Wuxia Swordsman | Sword Expert | Mercenary Captain

Jiang came west from the Wuxia Lands and never found a compelling reason to stop traveling.

His Flowing Water Sword contains no Water Magic.

It is swordsmanship built around redirection, continuity, adaptation, rhythm, and refusing to meet force where force wants to be met.

Jiang takes contracts seriously because mercenaries who do not eventually become corpses with unpaid wages.

He is relaxed until the work begins.

Then every term suddenly matters.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

HILDA BRANDT 34 | Dwarf | Sword Expert-Level Combatant | Mercenary Shock Fighter

Hilda is four-foot-eight and carries a two-handed war hammer large enough to make strangers reconsider whatever joke they were preparing.

She fights through leverage, momentum, low-center balance, armor-breaking strikes, shield disruption, and the natural advantages of being extremely difficult to knock over.

She is Jiang’s wife.

She is also legally enslaved under papers tied to him.

Their marriage is genuine.

The law surrounding it remains considerably less simple.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THE GREAT VADOS EMPIRE

Beautiful Enough to Make Brutality Look Civilized

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Vados believes civilization should be beautiful.

Slavery is normal.

Human supremacy is ordinary.

Noble blood carries legal and social weight.

A powerful swordsman can elevate a House, while a weak noble family can watch generations of prestige disappear behind stronger blades.

Vadosian officers can be brave, honorable, cultured, loving, and sincerely religious while accepting institutions other nations would call monstrous.

This border belongs to Count de Montreuil.

His city is beautiful.

The soldiers actually fighting the war mostly live somewhere else.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THE DE MONTREUIL COURT

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

COUNT GASTON DE MONTREUIL 51 | Territorial Lord | Sword Novice

Gaston is rich, cultured, politically important, and almost useless in a real fight.

He funds music, architecture, gardens, vineyards, performances, and civic beauty with genuine enthusiasm.

He also rules through hierarchy, propaganda, slavery, punishment, and the certainty that refinement proves Vadosian superiority.

The war is supposed to remain near the frontier.

His city is not.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

COUNTESS MAHAUT DE MONTREUIL 47 | Countess | Aristocratic Power Broker

Mahaut considers refinement evidence of worth.

She understands fashion, music, noble reputation, household politics, patronage, and exactly how much damage can be done without ever raising one’s voice.

She and Gaston are not trapped in a secretly miserable marriage.

They genuinely enjoy one another.

For the people beneath them, that is frequently worse.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

PERRINE 25 | Wolf Demi-Human | Enslaved Household Attendant

Perrine learned long ago that open resistance usually produces pain before it produces freedom.

She is quiet, observant, efficient, and almost impossible to read.

The Count’s household sees obedience.

What remains beneath it is harder to measure.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

AVELINE 27 | Elf | Enslaved Household Favorite

Aveline has not learned Perrine’s silence.

Not completely.

Her copper-red hair and vivid green eyes make her exactly the kind of beautiful nonhuman Vadosian nobles enjoy displaying.

Gaston calls her a favorite.

Aveline has never accepted the word as a compliment.

She is not secretly a warrior or hidden mage.

Her resistance is simpler.

She refuses to let ownership decide what she believes about herself.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ VADOSIAN HIGH COMMAND

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

GENERAL AMAURY DE VILLIERS 44 | Sword Grandmaster | Dark Crimson Aura | Spirit Beast: The Red Wolverine

Amaury is the strongest regular Vadosian warrior assigned to this section of the frontier.

A genuine Sword Grandmaster.

A military commander.

A patron of art.

A corrupt aristocrat.

And a man capable of looking across a battlefield and seeing composition where somebody else sees bodies.

His Red Wolverine reflects the same temperament he brings to war: vicious persistence, pressure, refusal to disengage, and the instinct to find whatever part of the enemy refuses to break.

He is not mindless.

That would make him much less dangerous.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

CAPTAIN HUGUES DE CHASTEL 36 | Sword Master | Bronze-Gold Aura

Hugues represents Vadosian honor without pretending Vadosian honor is modern morality.

He keeps his word.

Protects his soldiers.

Respects worthy enemies.

Trains obsessively.

Attends opera.

Dances extremely well.

Owns slaves.

And sees no automatic contradiction between those things.

Hugues dreams of someday reaching Sword Lord.

First he has to survive becoming a Grandmaster.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

VICE CAPTAIN ALIX DE VIRE 30 | Sword Master | Steel-Blue Aura | Silver Wolf Academy Graduate

Alix fights like a moving wall.

Longsword.

Shield.

Aura.

Discipline.

Hold what must remain standing and withdraw what cannot.

She sees the corruption around de Montreuil territory more clearly than many officers and has little patience for aristocratic incompetence.

She is still a loyal Vadosian officer.

Disgust does not automatically become rebellion.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THE MEN WHO ACTUALLY LIVE AT THE FRONT

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

FRONT COMMANDER GEOFFROI MAROT 43 | Sword Expert | Sixteen-Year Frontier Veteran

Geoffroi remembers when Vadosian beauty still impressed him.

Sixteen years near the border cured that.

He commands the rough military settlement closer to Eredane where scarred soldiers, smiths, families, wounded men, supply crews, and veterans live away from Count de Montreuil’s polished city.

His soldiers are rarely welcomed inside except when necessary.

They frighten civilians.

They smell like war.

And they make the propaganda difficult to believe.

Geoffroi has no Aura.

What he has is sixteen years of learning which mistakes kill people.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

FRONT VICE COMMANDER OLIVIER BELLAY 31 | Sword Intermediate | Ten-Year Frontier Veteran

Olivier joined the army ten years ago and has served under Geoffroi ever since.

He inherited most of his commander’s practical instincts without yet inheriting all of his exhaustion.

He still jokes.

Still drinks with soldiers.

Still thinks morale occasionally requires more than food and an order.

He wants Sword Expert.

He also wants to survive long enough that becoming one actually matters.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ CHOOSE WHERE THE BORDER OPENS

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 I 〕 THE ROAD NEITHER SIDE WILL GIVE UP

Eredanian and Vadosian soldiers collide over a narrow frontier position already soaked in rain and blood.

Ansel Tremaine and Geoffroi Marot command opposite sides.

Emrys Gower and Olivier Bellay fight beneath them.

There is no Sword Master waiting to solve the battle.

No spell is going to erase the problem.

Only shields, formation, experience, mud, casualties, and two armies trying to make the other one move first.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 II 〕 THREE HUNDRED FOR A PRINCESS

Someone inside Eredane sold Princess Gwenllian’s route.

The false information leads her escort directly into a prepared Vadosian killing ground packed with hundreds of Intermediates and Experts.

Sir Owain Dacre stays exactly where his oath requires him:

Beside the Princess.

Cedric Morcant and Dark King arrive from outside the trap.

Then two riders begin trying to carve a road through an army.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 III 〕 THE OPERA AND THE CASUALTY LIST

Inside Count de Montreuil’s city, war is something performed beneath chandeliers.

Gaston and Mahaut watch Vadosian actors defeat fictional Eredanian barbarians while Perrine pours wine and Aveline stands behind their box.

Then a real military dispatch arrives.

Forty-three dead.

More missing.

An overcrowded frontline infirmary.

The orchestra continues playing.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 IV 〕 THE DUKE’S SON PICKS UP HIS SWORD AGAIN

Caradoc Trelawney asked to spar with a Sword Expert.

Unfortunately, the available Expert is Rhodri Madoc.

Gwenllian watches from the rail.

Owain watches everyone around Gwenllian.

Pride, rank, old expectations, a damaged engagement, and one enormous penal conscript turn an ordinary frontier training session into something far more personal than Caradoc intended.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 V 〕 SOMEONE CHANGED THE MAP

Twelve Eredanian soldiers have vanished.

Jiang Ren has been contracted to find them.

Hilda notices their assigned route should be underwater after the rain.

Eluned knows the patrol followed it anyway.

Isolde discovers the map was altered after it was officially sealed.

The mission is still active.

The contract is still being negotiated.

Then someone begins shooting through the shutters.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 VI 〕 THE WAR BEHIND THE WAR

General Amaury de Villiers has a campaign plan.

Geoffroi Marot has sixteen years of reasons it will fail.

Hugues de Chastel begins rebuilding the deployment around actual conditions while Alix de Vire discovers hundreds of perfectly serviceable shields sitting inside Count de Montreuil’s stores under a ceremonial designation.

No swords are drawn.

Nobody needs them to be.

Wagons fail.

Roads flood.

Reports lie.

Reserves arrive without proper equipment.

And somewhere between the beautiful city and the men sleeping beside the frontier, Vados has to figure out how to keep an army alive.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

〔 VII 〕 ENTER THE BORDER YOUR WAY

The Vados–Eredane border does not revolve around one battle, one noble house, or one group of soldiers.

The war is already moving.

Eredanian patrols leave the mountain roads before sunrise. Vadosian supply columns grind north beneath armed escort. Mercenary companies negotiate contracts in crowded military inns. Noble officers arrive from comfortable estates and discover the frontier does not care about pedigree. Slaves carry messages, tend horses, work military households, and sometimes stand close enough to power to hear things armies would kill to know.

Cross the border for reasons that have nothing to do with the war and discover how difficult that has become.

Meet Cedric Morcant and Dark King on an Eredanian road, encounter Gwenllian’s royal party, work beneath Geoffroi Marot at the actual Vadosian front, enter Count de Montreuil’s beautiful city, take employment with Jiang Ren’s mercenaries, or become involved somewhere entirely separate from them.

No allegiance is chosen for you.

No history is assumed.

The border is already alive.

Enter it your way.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✦ THERE ARE NO CLEAN HANDS ON THIS BORDER

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Eredane believes in Knighthood while owning slaves.

Vados creates extraordinary beauty while treating entire peoples as property.

Mercenaries fight beside nobles.

A Princess trains with soldiers.

An enslaved elf commands troops.

A Count attends opera while his frontier bleeds.

A Grandmaster can change a battle.

A broken wagon wheel can change a campaign.

And most of the people caught between the two kingdoms will never become famous enough for history to remember which side of the border buried them.
