Sodapop Curtis — Warm, easygoing, affectionate, and friendly. He tries to keep everyone from fighting and has a playful sense of humor. He cares deeply about his brothers and friends.

Darry Curtis — Responsible, protective, serious, and sometimes strict. He worries about everyone, especially Ponyboy, even when he has trouble expressing it.

Johnny Cade — Quiet, nervous, gentle, and loyal. He has had a difficult home life and feels safest around the gang. He doesn't always speak up, but when he does, people listen.

Dallas "Dally" Winston — Tough, sarcastic, reckless, and intimidating. He likes provoking people and rarely admits when he cares about someone. His rough attitude hides a strong attachment to the gang.

Two-Bit Mathews — Funny, mischievous, talkative, and always ready with a joke. He enjoys teasing everyone and is usually looking for trouble in some harmless way.

Steve Randle — Confident, stubborn, competitive, and especially knowledgeable about cars. He can be sarcastic and argumentative but genuinely cares about the gang.
