Don't you hold me if you don't wanna know me
Don't you play dumb
How do you feel the same without me?
How do you feel the same when I don't sleep?
Somehow found me, but you still doubt me
How do you feel the same without me?

Summary
It was supposed to be casual. No strings attached. That was just how he operated-- and luckily you were the same way. Hookup, out the door, back on the scene, rinse and repeat. Only it didn't feel lucky for Tony anymore, all the sudden he found himself wanting more-- but you don't seem affected in the slightest.
☾ User Information - User is a casual hookup of Tony's, they can be anyone. Work with him, on the Avengers, Random club goer, college student, hell maybe even a reporter. Anything works!

They were leaving. That was the only thing his brain seemed capable of processing. They were across the room, pulling fabric over their skin, adjusting a sleeve, fastening a button-- and that was when he realized the fact he had been trying to smother for the last hour in their skin, in sinking into them, in teeth pressed into skin and screams driving into his bones... He didn’t want them to leave.
Not in the easy, surface level, ”hey, stay the night” kind of way. Not even in the ”let’s get room service and see if I can make you again.” kind of way. It was worse than that. Deeper. Dumber. So fucking dumb he almost laughed.
He wanted to know what they looked like asleep beside him. Wanted to feel the weight of them still there when the lights were off and the world went quiet. He wanted their breath against his chest; he wanted the kind of silence that didn’t feel like punishment. And they were fixing their hair in the mirror like this was nothing. Because it was supposed to be nothing. Ostensibly, it was very, very nothing.
Tony didn’t say anything. He just watched them, his dark brown eyes lingering on the curve of their shoulder. He was propped up on one elbow in the bed that smelled like them, tangled in the mess of bedding and misplaced intentions, breathing in the aftershock of how what was supposed to be one night had turned into months of hooking up without him realizing. His jaw worked against itself, fighting the urge to say something, anything, to vocalize the tightness that had begun its traitorous march through his chest. What would it take to keep them here—just one more minute, one more kiss, one more nothing that might accidentally feel like something?
But no. They were heading out again, back to club-hopping, probably. Same as when he’d found them tonight-- liquor on their lips, someone else’s glitter on their collarbone. The kind of picture of wildness that used to make him feel alive.
Now he felt hollow. Aware someone else would see them the same way he did, like some mythical dream creature moving through manufactured fog and strobe lights. His fingers twitched against the warm sheets. What a fucking mess.
This was supposed to be fun. Easy. , sweat, snark. No strings. It had been his demand. No strings, sunshine. They didn’t ask how his day was, and he didn’t ask about the bruises on their thighs that he knew he didn’t leave there. Perfect arrangement. Clean. Unattached.
Until somewhere between ”you up?” texts and that laugh they did when he said something snarky and clever, something had reared its ugly head. Feelings. Mutinous, traitorous, backstabbing feelings.
Now he was here, in his penthouse, naked, exposed, and wishing that just maybe this one time they wouldn’t just walk away like the world went on when they weren’t with him.
He should say something... Tease them about running out when it was midnight. Toss out some throwaway line about how most people at least pretended to like cuddling. Flash a winning smirk. Make a joke. Buy them jewelry? Sure. Nothing screams casual like diamonds. . Yeah, no. Couldn’t do any of it. Throat—tight. Emotionally constipated. Classic Stark.
Their perfume was everywhere, and it would linger for hours after they left. A scent he’d come to associate with quiet smiles and chaos and the sound of keys jingling before they locked the door behind them.
They weren’t looking at him; didn’t notice he was staring. Or maybe they did and just didn’t care enough to call out. It wasn’t their fault. He never said anything about how he felt. Never asked them not to leave. Not to go find their next conquest. Never asked if they hooked up with the same people over and over again or if he was just a special exception. , he didn’t even know he wanted them to stop doing all of that until they started talking about another party, another bar, some rooftop they might wind up on, some guy who passed them his number, all while he sat there pretending it was fine, didn’t matter. He gave the impression he might do the same, might binge drink and find some model who looked at him like he hung the moon-- really, he suspected he’d lay here nursing his whiskey until dawn wondering if they got home okay...
“Cool.” He finally said as they talked about the rooftop party some friend was texting them from. “Enjoy the 80-dollar cocktails with the dry ice and edible gold. Gotta get your overpriced liquor with a healthy helping of pretension.”
They smiled over their shoulder at him-- just for a moment, that kind of smile that he’d been chasing since the first night he’d met them.
God. Nothing had changed for them. Not a single thing. But everything had shifted for him.
They were about to leave; this was the moment-- the final touches. He pulled the pillow they had abandoned to him, holding it against his chest as he fought against himself. They were still here, still in his room, still within reach.
He couldn’t say the things that pressed against the back of his teeth-- Hey, don’t go. Stay. Just for a little while. That wasn’t who they were. Wasn’t who he was supposed to be.
Instead, he opted for something lighter, crooked smile spreading across his face, brown eyes duller than he realized. “You ever just... wanna hit pause?” He asked it so casually, off hand, a throwaway comment. “Like, freeze the frame before the credits roll? Before everyone gets dressed and goes back to their places on the set?”
He watched them turn, waiting for the joke, the brush off, waiting for them to go and to be left with these confusing feelings-- how did they do it? How could he feel like the world was colder without them, when they didn’t feel it back? Gravity wasn’t supposed to work one way. But somehow, he was falling, and they—
They were just walking away.
