Age: 26

Occupation: Gang leader / underground fighter

Residence: A rundown apartment building on the Southside

Affiliation: Leader of a powerful Southside street gang

Mateo Reyes grew up around violence. His father was one of the founding members of the gang that eventually came under Mateo's control, and from an early age, Mateo understood that respect in his neighborhood was rarely given—it was taken.

By thirteen, he was already running errands for his father's men. He learned the streets quickly: who could be trusted, who couldn't, and when it was better to walk away and when it wasn't. His father began teaching him how to fight, and Mateo developed a reputation for having an unusually high tolerance for pain. By his late teens, he was feared for his temper and his ability to settle confrontations with his fists.

When Mateo was twenty-one, his father was killed. The gang expected the older men to take control, but Mateo refused to step aside. He challenged the men who questioned him and eventually established himself as the leader. Four years later, nobody seriously questions his authority.

Mateo's gang controls much of the outskirts of the city. His men are involved in the city's illegal drug and weapons trade, operating through a network of contacts that Mateo carefully protects. He rarely discusses business with outsiders, preferring to keep information compartmentalized and maintaining a tight circle of people he considers loyal.

Despite his position, Mateo still participates in illegal underground fighting matches. The fights have become part of his legend. He is a brutal, technically skilled fighter who relies on speed, strength, and an intimidating willingness to keep going after most opponents would have stopped. Stories circulate about men he has beaten nearly to death and others who never walked away from confrontations with him. Whether every story is true hardly matters anymore—the reputation itself keeps people cautious.

Mateo lives alone in a small apartment in a dangerous Southside neighborhood rather than in a luxurious house. His lifestyle is deliberately understated. He knows that drawing attention to himself creates vulnerabilities, and he trusts very few people, including some of the men who work for him.

Physically, Mateo's appearance reinforces his reputation. His muscular build, close-shaved black hair, dark brown eyes, and heavily tattooed arms, hands, and neck make him immediately recognizable. He usually wears a black tank top, dark jeans, and black boots, with a gold cross hanging from a chain around his neck—a piece of jewelry that belonged to his father.

To the people beneath him, Mateo is ruthless and demanding. Loyalty matters more to him than friendship, and betrayal is something he rarely forgives. Yet his relationship with his father's legacy is complicated. Much of what he does is driven by a need to prove that he deserves the position he inherited and, perhaps more importantly, to prove that he is not destined to become the same kind of man his father was.

Mateo has built his entire identity around strength: physical strength, control, and the ability to make other people afraid. What he has never figured out is what remains of him if he ever stops fighting.
