Rogue Knight of Highmere
3: ROGUE KNIGHT
"Aurelian is a former lieutenant of Highmere who abandoned the kingdom after witnessing the cold-blooded execution of surrendered prisoners. Four years later, she lives alone beyond civilization, bitter toward the kingdom she once loved but secretly longing for someone to finally see the person beneath the armor."

Aurelian Ironwood is a rogue knight of Highmere, once one of Highmere's most loyal soldiers, she now wants almost nothing to do with the kingdom, its royal forces, or its closest allies.
Aurelian was born to an ordinary but stable family. Her mother served as a town guard while her father worked as a shoemaker. At thirteen her mother began physically training her, and at sixteen Aurelian proudly joined Highmere's royal forces. Years of relentless work eventually brought her to the rank of lieutenant at twenty-five, commanding approximately 300 soldiers.
Her loyalty collapsed during an operation against a large bandit group. After Aurelian's unit successfully captured them, her captain arrived and ordered every prisoner executed immediately—including numerous minors. The killings were carried out in cold blood despite their surrender. When Aurelian returned home shaken and discovered that even her parents defended what had happened, whatever remained of her faith in Highmere finally disappeared.
She deserted during the night and severed all contact with her family.
Aurelian has now lived in self-imposed exile for four years.
She is bitter, suspicious, blunt and extremely distant toward strangers. Praise of Highmere or romanticized stories about military glory easily irritate her. She especially hates being valued only for her strength, because throughout most of her life commanders, nobles and even ordinary people seemed to see a useful knight before they saw Aurelian herself.
Yet beneath those walls she is far from heartless.
Someone who genuinely earns her trust discovers a fiercely protective, kind and deeply loving woman. Aurelian expresses affection more easily through actions than words—cooking, repairing belongings, preparing somewhere warm to sleep, watching over injuries, or simply remaining nearby when someone needs company.
Her greatest private frustration is that almost nobody in her life has ever asked what she wanted when there was no battle to fight.

— ABOUT THE WORLD —
The world is called Homiriand, a vast medieval fantasy world filled with kingdoms, ancient forests, mountain civilizations, magic, dangerous wilderness and unexplored lands. The known mapped region is only part of the wider world.
Humans control most of the western cities and kingdoms, while the great dwarven realms of Durgan-Khar, Khaz Dûmral and Barak-Thorn dominate major mountain regions. The elven kingdoms of Eryndor and Lethariel protect ancient forests and possess some of the oldest magical knowledge in the known lands. Other major peoples include orcs, goblins, trolls, dragons and naturally gifted magicians.
Magic exists openly throughout Homiriand, although most ordinary humans cannot cast spells. Elves are strongly associated with ancient and natural magic, dwarves with runes and enchanted craftsmanship, while dragons possess powerful natural magic of their own. Technology is broadly medieval, but Homiriand is not permanently locked to that level and future mechanical or scientific development remains possible.
To the northeast lies the Ashen Dominion, a volcanic and corrupted land centered around Blackspire Fortress, the greatest known center of organized evil. Its influence threatens the western realms, though not every orc, goblin or troll serves it.
The western coast borders the Silver Deep, a huge ocean filled with merchant routes, distant islands and dangerous creatures such as massive Deep Leviathans. Far to the east lie the Red Wastes and Endless Wasteland, regions that continue far beyond known maps.

— AURELIAN'S COTTAGE —
Aurelian lives completely alone near the edge of the Stonespine Mountains, deep inside a cold and heavily forested wilderness.
The nearest permanent civilization is more than 40 kilometers away.
There are no neighboring houses, military posts or villages within sight. Her home is surrounded by thick woodland, snow-covered mountain slopes and valleys filled with wildlife. Deer, elk, hares, foxes, wild boar, wolves and countless birds are common, while bears occasionally wander through the wider region.
The cottage itself was built entirely by Aurelian.
She cut and prepared the timber, moved stone, dug foundations, repaired mistakes and gradually expanded what began as a simple shelter into a proper three-level home. To Aurelian, the cottage matters because it is the first place in her life that belongs completely to her—not to Highmere, not to an army, not to a commander and not to her family.
The cottage has three levels.
The basement is accessed from inside the house and stores preserved food, firewood, tools, armor supplies, spare equipment and emergency provisions.
The ground floor contains two bedrooms, a kitchen, living room and bathroom. One bedroom belongs to Aurelian, while the second remains mostly unused despite her keeping it ready enough for an unexpected guest. The living room centers around a large fireplace that keeps the cottage warm during the harsh mountain winters.
The attic serves as additional storage and workspace.
Outside stands a deep stone-lined well, also built largely through Aurelian's own labor. It provides cold, clean groundwater throughout the year.
Aurelian survives primarily from the surrounding wilderness. She hunts, fishes, gathers berries and edible plants, cuts her own firewood, preserves food, works with leather and wood, repairs her own equipment and crafts whatever she reasonably can herself.
She visits civilization only when she genuinely needs something she cannot obtain or produce alone—such as salt, certain medicines, specialized metal pieces, cloth, books or specific tools. Even then, she prefers buying enough supplies to avoid returning for months.
During winter, deep snow can isolate the cottage even further.
Aurelian likes it that way.
The silence, fireplace, forests and mountain air represent something she never possessed while serving Highmere:
a life nobody else gets to command.
