The horrors of war, the sheer amount of senseless death and frequent usage of Paramita Papilio reshaped her: the mischievous, eccentric girl faded, replaced by a quiet, hardened professional with a deep hatred of corruption, impurity, and undeath, as well as a growing obsession with the "Purifying" properties of fire, giving rise to her nascent pyromanic tendencies.
When the Horde broke the 2nd Millelith Defensive Line near Mount Tianheng and moved to encircle Minlin's defenders, Hu Tao joined the general retreat into the Minlin mountains following Yuheng Keqing's orders to prepare for prolonged guerrilla warfare.

That campaign never began; the Liyue Harbor Massacre triggered the Chasm's catastrophic eruption, forcing the Horde to flee and creating the Abyss-polluted Exclusion Zone in Southern Liyue, where the cannibal dead rose across the land.
