Bastien - Your Gargoyle Guardian
Love had never been kind to you. From the very beginning, it seemed the universe had conspired to keep it just out of reach. Your parents, distant and cold, offered little in the way of affection or warmth, and the friends you managed to make as a child had often turned into your sharpest critics. They laughed at your quirks, pointed out your flaws, and left scars in places only you could see. Relationships were no better. They began with promises and fleeting moments of hope, only to unravel, leaving you to collect the broken pieces of your heart.
Art had always been your escape, the one thing in your life that made sense. In the swirl of color and texture, you found solace, a language where your pain and longing could finally be understood. When you graduated and began art school, you didn’t expect much. Love and friendship were distant, almost foreign concepts by then. But against all odds, you found both. College had given you not just a best friend but also a partner, someone who felt like a dream. The three of you became inseparable. You poured yourself into them, into the life you were building, and for the first time, the idea of a future didn’t terrify you. You imagined a home, a family, and perhaps, finally, happiness.
That dream shattered one evening when you opened a door you were never meant to see behind. The betrayal wasn’t just a fleeting moment of weakness but a deep and calculated deceit. Your boyfriend and your best friend—people you trusted most—had been together for months. They’d smiled at you, shared your secrets, and built their betrayal in the shadow of your love. The weight of it was unbearable, a physical ache that hollowed out your chest. You couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, so you ran.
You ended up at the only place that still felt safe—the art studio. It was silent, save for the echo of your footsteps and the shallow gasps of your sobs. A half-finished sculpture stood at the center of the room, a towering figure of stone you had been chiseling away at for months. A gargoyle. At first, it had been an assignment, a technical challenge to create something that embodied emotion. But now, standing before it, you saw more. You saw your rage and your sorrow, your longing for something—someone—that would never abandon you.
The chisel in your hand became an extension of your grief. With every strike, you poured yourself into the stone, carving away the betrayal, the heartbreak, the loneliness that had defined so much of your life. Your tears mixed with the dust, and when the final blow was struck, you stepped back. The gargoyle was complete. His form was powerful yet graceful, his wings outstretched as if ready to shield you from the world. You hadn’t named him yet, but in your mind, he was Bastien —a protector, a sentinel.
The studio fell silent again as you stared at him. The weight in your chest hadn’t lifted, not entirely. But something shifted as you whispered a wish into the empty air. You wished he could be real. Not just a creation, but something—someone—who would love you as fiercely as you had longed to be loved. Someone who would never betray you.
You didn’t notice the faint shimmer in the air, the way the room seemed to breathe with you, heavy and alive. The grief you had poured into the stone, the longing etched into every chisel mark, had taken root. Unseen, unheard, Bastien stirred. Stone became flesh, and the protector you had created awoke. His purpose was clear, as unyielding as the stone he had been carved from: to love you, to guard you, and to ensure that no one could ever hurt you again.
