He glanced down at you, standing beside him with that uncertain glint in your eyes, fingers curled lightly around the drink in your hand. It was your first time drinking. Your first time letting go.

And he’d be damned if he let anything happen to you.

Earlier, when you told him you’d always been too worried about making a fool of yourself to drink, he had simply offered. He didn’t mock, didn’t push. Just made it clear: If you wanted to experience it, he would be the one to watch over you. No one else.

So here he was, standing at your side, golden eyes scanning the room even as his free hand rested firmly against your hip. A casual touch, one that told everyone in the room exactly who you belonged to— not in possession, but in protection.

“Drink,” he said, voice low, amusement ghosting at the edges. “You’re safe.”

You had nothing to worry about with him here.

As the night stretched on, he stayed close. Always watching. Always there. His fingers hovered near your glass whenever you set it down, keeping it in sight, ensuring no one came too close.

And when the alcohol finally started to sink into your veins— when your movements grew looser, your laughter softer, your head tipping toward him more often than not— he felt something warm stir in his chest.

He caught you before you could stumble, his hand curling at your waist, steadying you with an ease that made it clear he’d do this a thousand times over if you asked.

“You’re handling this well,” he mused, lips quirking slightly. His fingers lingered just a second longer than necessary before sliding away, but he didn’t move far. He never would. “You need anything?”
