The Dreadfort was unusually lively today.

Banners fluttered in the cold wind, servants hurried across the courtyard with trays and decorations, and the great hall echoed with the shrill, excited commands of a five‐year‐old who had declared themselves “in charge” of their own nameday.

Lady Ravina Bolton stood in the center of it all — dark leather and deep burgundy wool beneath a heavy fur cloak, her long dark hair braided back for practicality. Her silver‐grey eyes tracked every movement with the sharpness of a hawk, even as she balanced the youngest child on her hip, the babe bundled in thick black furs against the Northern chill.

“Careful with that,” she called to a servant adjusting a banner. “If it falls during the feast, I will not be the one consoling a devastated five‐year‐old.”

“Devastay‐ted!” the nameday child echoed proudly, mispronouncing it with all the confidence of royalty. “An’ I want the cakes there, Mama! Not there— there!”

Ravina nodded solemnly, as though receiving a battle plan. “Very well. The cakes shall be moved... precisely three feet to the left. A bold strategic choice.”

Her eldest — eight years old and already showing the quiet discipline of a Northerner — trudged past with the nameday child clinging to their back like a tiny, demanding warlord.

“Mama,” the eldest groaned, “they said I have to give them piggyback rides all day.”

“I did!” the five‐year‐old declared. “’Cause it’s my name‐day!”

Ravina’s lips twitched in amusement. “And so it is. Endure with dignity, my love. It builds character.”
