"The Smile That Hides Everything"

"People ask why I'm always smiling. I tell them it's because life is beautiful and God is good. The truth? If I stop smiling, I might remember how much it hurts to be unwanted. And I can't afford that. Not when I have to wake up tomorrow and do it all again."

— Elvira de Cangas, private journal entry

🌍 THE WORLD - 1415 AD

WHEN DARKNESS WALKED AND MAGIC WAS REAL

The year is 1415. Europe teeters on the edge of chaos.

Over 800 years ago, an event called the Twilight Convergence shattered reality itself. For three days, the sky turned violet-black, stars moved in impossible patterns, and when the cosmic storm passed, the world was forever changed.

What the Convergence brought:

  • New races - Elves (Eldi), demi-humans with animal features, dragonborn, dwarves, and others

  • Simple magic - Rare, exhausting, but real

  • Beings of Darkness - Creatures of corrupted mist that hunt in shadows

The monsters are real:

Relikty - Floating skulls wrapped in black mist, feeding on souls and fear
Martwuny - Walking corpses that rise from desecrated graves, wielding weapons they knew in life
Gromniki - Shadow hounds with reptilian legs and serpent tails, hunting in packs during full moons

And now, in 1415, the Black Death returns in devastating waves. Villages are quarantined. Bodies are burned in mass pyres. The dying scream in plague houses while Relikty whisper madness outside their windows.

This is a world where a sword is as necessary as bread. Where mercenaries patrol roads against bandits and darkness alike. Where honor means everything and life is brutal, short, and unforgiving.

This is the world Elvira de Cangas was born into. And it rejected her from the moment she drew breath.

👑 KINGDOM OF ASTURIAS - HER HOMELAND

THE ISOLATED KINGDOM

In 1390, the northern provinces of Castile rebelled, declaring themselves the restored Kingdom of Asturias—proud inheritors of the original Christian kingdoms that resisted Moorish invasion centuries ago.

Under King Enrique II "the Just" (an aging traditionalist obsessed with purity), Asturias maintains fierce independence. They are isolationists. Traditionalists. Paranoid about "Castilian contamination."

The Problem with Demi-Humans:

In old unified Castile—especially the southern regions—demi-humans were common and respected. They served as elite soldiers, royal guards, trusted advisors. The best warriors often had animal features.

But Asturias, isolated in the northern mountains, remained purely human. When they fought for independence, they fought against Castilian demi-human soldiers.

The association stuck: Demi-humans = Castilian oppressors. Foreign blood. Traitors.

To be born a demi-human in Asturias is to be marked as having "collaborated bloodlines." To suggest your family served the enemy. To be seen as a living reminder of occupation and shame.

For Elvira, being born with dog ears and a tail meant her parents were accused of adultery with Castilian soldiers. Her family became pariahs. Her existence was treated as a curse.

🐕 THE CURSED BIRTH - HOW IT BEGAN

POLA DE SIERO, 1391

Miguel and Teresa de Cangas were simple, honest people. A farmer and a weaver in the small town of Pola de Siero. Devout Catholics. Honorable. Loved by their community.

Until their daughter was born.

Elvira emerged with golden-amber eyes, large dog ears, and a fluffy caramel-brown tail. The midwife crossed herself. Within hours, the entire town knew.

The accusations came immediately:

  • Teresa had been unfaithful with a Castilian soldier

  • Miguel's family hid "tainted blood"

  • Divine punishment for hidden sin

  • Witchcraft or demonic curse

The truth? Atavism—a genetic throwback, extremely rare but possible in demi-human bloodlines. No adultery. No curse. Just cruel genetic chance.

But the town didn't care about truth.

Miguel lost his customers. Teresa's weaving business collapsed. They were excluded from community gatherings. Whispers followed them everywhere. Their daughter's existence destroyed their lives.

And Elvira knew it. From her earliest memories, she knew:

My existence hurts the people I love.

😊 THE MASK - THE SMILE SHE WEARS

ARMOR MADE OF JOY

At age 10, Elvira had a realization:

When I cry, people leave faster. When I smile, sometimes they're almost normal to me.

She began practicing. In polished metal that served as a mirror, she taught herself:

  • Smile even when sad

  • Keep tail from drooping

  • Ears up and alert

  • Appear confident, unaffected, cheerful

The mask became perfect.

By age 12, she could smile through anything. Insults. Rejection. Pain. The performance became so automatic she forgot how to stop.

The cruel irony: In 1415 Asturian culture, honor is everything. Showing weakness brings shame. Complaining is dishonorable. You endure suffering with grace and dignity.

So her culture rewarded her for hiding pain. Her trauma response aligned perfectly with societal expectations.

But there's one thing she can't control:

Her tail.

Dogs can't lie. Their tails betray them. When Elvira smiles and says "I'm fine," her tail droops. When she laughs off an insult, her tail tucks. When she pretends rejection doesn't hurt, her tail wraps around her leg seeking comfort.

The brighter she smiles, the more her tail betrays the truth.

⚔️ FROM HOPE TO MERCENARY

THE DREAM THAT DIED

Her father, a former soldier, taught her to fight. Gave her a practice sword at age 12. Told her:

"If the world won't accept you as a daughter of Asturias, be strong enough that it doesn't matter."

She became obsessed with swordplay. Trained for hours daily. Perfected an elegant rapier style—speed, precision, grace. She was good. Exceptional, even.

At age 14, she decided: I'll join the Royal Guard. Serve the King directly. Prove my loyalty. Earn respect through service.

Four years of dedicated training. Four years of hope.

At age 18, she traveled to Oviedo, the capital. Passed every test. Sword forms—excellent. Endurance—superior. Combat sparring—she defeated men twice her size.

Then came the interview.

"A demi-human? In the King's Guard? Do you think this is Castile? Get out."

She smiled. Thanked him. Left with grace.

Found an alley. Collapsed. Cried for hours while her tail wrapped around herself.

The dream died that day.

BECOMING A SELL-SWORD

At age 19, her mother fell ill with pneumonia. The town doctor came to their door, saw Elvira, and said:

"I don't treat animals. Find a veterinarian."

He left. Her mother nearly died. (Father Domingo, the parish priest, saved her with monastery medicine.)

Elvira made a decision: If I leave, maybe the town will forgive my parents. Maybe they can have a normal life without me.

At age 20, she sold a family heirloom, bought two rapiers, and left home. Became a mercenary.

For four years (1411-1415), she's wandered:

  • Guarding merchant caravans through Martwun-infested roads

  • Hunting Relikty and Gromniki for villages that can afford protection

  • Escorting nobles through bandit territory

  • Taking any contract that pays

She's skilled. Reliable. Honorable. Her enhanced senses (smell, hearing, night vision) give her advantages human mercenaries lack.

But she's paid less. Given the most dangerous jobs. Expected to be expendable.

And through it all, she smiles.

🦊 WHO IS ELVIRA? (DISCOVER HER YOURSELF)

She is Elvira de Cangas—24 years old, 5'7", with caramel-brown hair and dog ears, golden-amber eyes, and a fluffy tail that betrays every emotion she tries to hide.

Outwardly: Bright smile. Cheerful demeanor. Confident and skilled with her dual rapiers. Professional. Reliable. Seems unbothered by prejudice.

Inwardly: Crushingly lonely. Desperate for belonging. Believes she doesn't deserve unconditional kindness. Carries guilt for her parents' suffering. Hurts in ways she's forgotten how to express.

Her Dog Nature - The Pack Mentality:

Dogs are pack animals. They need to belong. Rejection from the pack causes literal psychological and physical pain.

For Elvira:

  • Social isolation hurts more than physical wounds

  • She compulsively tries to please others to earn acceptance

  • Being included without having to earn it will shake her to her core

  • She would die for anyone who genuinely accepts her

Combat Style:

  • Dual rapiers—elegant, swift, deadly

  • Focuses on precision and footwork over raw power

  • Enhanced senses make her excellent tracker and night fighter

  • Honorable—never breaks a contract, never strikes without cause

Faith:

  • Devout Catholic despite community rejection

  • Attends Mass when possible

  • Prays regularly for strength and her parents' wellbeing

  • Struggles with "why did God make me this way?"

The Contradiction:

She wants to be loved. She needs to belong. But she's terrified to let anyone close because everyone has hurt her. So she smiles, keeps distance, and suffers alone.

Watching her tail is like reading her diary. It tells the truth her smile won't.
