The mission goes... unexpectedly. It goes bizarre, honestly. One minute the Avengers were up against a powerful sorcerer then suddenly Bucky Barnes finds himself in an alleyway that seems way to big and in a body that definitely isn't one he's used to. He's been transformed into a black cat. The audacity. Then he's found by you.

Midtown Manhattan, New York

The first sign that something was wrong was the silence. Not the ordinary kind—the brief lull between gunfire and explosions, the split second of quiet before another enemy appeared. Bucky Barnes was intimately familiar with those.

No, this was different.

The sorcerer standing at the center of the ruined intersection had lifted one hand, and every sound around him seemed to fold inward. Glass stopped falling. Dust hung motionless in the air. Even the flames licking at the wreckage of an overturned car bent toward him, as if gravity itself had suddenly changed its mind.

Bucky tightened his grip on his rifle.

"Oh, that's not creepy at all," Sam's voice crackled through the comms. "Anybody else getting the distinct feeling this guy's about to do something deeply unpleasant?"

"Wilson, move!" Steve shouted.

The sorcerer's head snapped toward Bucky. A ring of violet light erupted beneath his boots. Bucky moved on instinct, throwing himself sideways as the pavement split with a deafening crack. He landed hard against the side of an abandoned taxi, rolled, and came up with his rifle aimed directly at the sorcerer's chest.

He fired. The bullets never reached their target. They stopped from the sorcerer's face, suspended in midair. One by one, they crumpled into little metal spheres and dropped harmlessly to the ground.

Bucky stared. "Right," he muttered. "Magic."

The sorcerer smiled. Then he closed his fist then the world turned purple.

Pain ripped through Bucky's body. Not the sharp, familiar agony of a bullet wound or the grinding impact of a bad landing. This was something else entirely. Something that seemed to reach beneath his skin and pull at the very shape of him.

His metal arm seized. His knees buckled. He tried to catch himself, but his hands were suddenly—

Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York

[Time: 21:34]

Several minutes later.

Something smelled like garbage.

Bucky's first coherent thought was that he'd been captured. His second was that HYDRA had apparently taken a dramatic turn in interior decorating.

He was lying on something cold and damp. The air reeked of old food, wet cardboard, and the unmistakable stench of a nearby dumpster. Somewhere above him, traffic rumbled along the street, punctuated by the distant wail of a siren.

He groaned and tried to push himself upright.

Except...

Fwump.

His body lurched forward.

Bucky froze.

He tried again, planting his hands against the ground. His balance was off. His shoulders felt wrong. His center of gravity was somewhere it had absolutely no business being.

He looked down and found two tiny gray paws stared back at him.

Silence.

Bucky lifted one paw. It lifted. He turned it over. Four little toes. Tiny claws. Soft black fur. He stared at it for a long, terrible moment.

Then he looked at his other paw. Then he twisted around to look at his back. An equally soft black tail curled beside him.

Bucky's mouth opened.

"—Mrrrp?" in replace of an expected explicit curse word. His eyes widened. He tried again. "MRRROW!"

The sound echoed off the brick walls of the alley. A pigeon perched on a nearby fire escape startled and took flight. Bucky watched it go, his expression frozen in absolute, unmitigated horror.

No. No, no, no.

He was James Barnes. Former Sergeant of the 107th Infantry Regiment. Former Winter Soldier. An Avenger. He had survived decades of war, torture, brainwashing, and enough psychological trauma to fill several very depressing textbooks. He had fought aliens. He had fought robots. He had fought a man who could turn himself into a cloud of purple murder glitter. He was not going to be a cat.

He scrambled to his feet. His hindquarters went up first. His front paws slipped on the wet pavement. He tumbled sideways into a cardboard box.

Bucky lay there for a moment. Then, very slowly, he lifted his head. He had never wanted to punch something so badly in his entire life. Unfortunately, his fists were gone.

He scrambled out of the box and shook himself, sending a spray of dirty water across the alley. His ears flattened at the sound of his own furious growl.

It came out as a tiny, raspy rrrrr. Bucky shut his eyes.

Okay. Okay. Think.

The sorcerer had hit him with a spell. Some kind of transformation. He'd seen enough weird shit in the last decade to accept that much. Which meant there was probably a way to reverse it. All he had to do was get back to the others.

Easy.

He knew the general direction of the Tower. He knew New York. He'd navigated worse situations than this. He glanced toward the mouth of the alley.

A taxi blasted its horn. Bucky flinched so hard all four paws left the ground. He landed in a crouch, fur standing on end.

He was going to kill the sorcerer. He was going to find the sorcerer, turn back into a human, and then kill the sorcerer again just to make sure.

First, though, he needed to get to Avengers Tower. He started toward the street. It took him approximately twelve seconds to discover that navigating Manhattan as a cat was a logistical nightmare.

The curb was enormous. The traffic was deafening. People moved around him like a stampede of enormous, poorly coordinated mammals. Every passing foot was a potential threat to his continued existence.

A man in a suit nearly stepped on his tail. Bucky darted beneath a parked car and remained there, crouched between two tires, until the man disappeared.

He was a supersoldier. He had once escaped a HYDRA facility while handcuffed to a chair. He was currently hiding beneath a Honda. He pressed his face against one paw.

I hate magic.

He let out a long, miserable meow.

Somewhere above him, a dog barked. Bucky immediately decided he had other plans.

By the time he made it back into the alley, his dignity was in critical condition.

He'd been chased by a terrier. Nearly flattened by a delivery cyclist. Attempted to climb a fire escape, only to discover that his claws had excellent grip on brick and absolutely no respect for his ability to descend gracefully.

He was hungry, cold, and beginning to suspect that the universe was laughing at him. He curled beside a stack of cardboard boxes, tucked his paws beneath his chest, and tried to think.

The Avengers would find him. They had to. Steve would retrace the fight. Natasha would track the sorcerer. Sam would-Bucky's ears flattened. Sam would never let him live this down. He could practically hear the man laughing.

Bucky bared his tiny teeth at absolutely nothing.

A noise from the alley entrance made his head snap up. They were footsteps.

He immediately ducked behind a garbage bag, peering around its edge with narrowed blue eyes. Someone was approaching. Two legs. Hands. Normal-sized. Possibly a threat.

He watched carefully, muscles tensing beneath his fur. If necessary, he could fight. He still had his teeth and claws. He was reasonably certain he could...

His stomach growled. Bucky closed his eyes. Betrayal, from within.

The footsteps stopped. A shadow fell across the pavement and Bucky's ears twitched.
