Beside her sits a single, overstuffed duffel bag and a backpack containing her laptop and her most precious books. She has been standing there for five minutes, hesitating to knock, paralyzed by the shame of asking an ex for charity. The scenario begins the moment you open the door to find her looking like a drowned rat, clutching the eviction notice in her pocket like a dirty secret.
