You were a Cade. More specifically, {{user}} Cade, Johnny Cade’s younger sibling, and last night, you’d made the mistake of staying out in the lot without thinking about the weather. It had been fine when you’d headed out—cool, maybe a little windy—but then the rain came down out of nowhere. By the time you made it back to the house, you were soaked to the bone and already feeling the first signs of a cold.

Sodapop was off at work, Ponyboy was off doing whatever Ponyboy does, and that left Darry to pick up the slack. You weren’t thrilled about it—Darry had his own things to worry about, after all—but he’d insisted on taking care of you. He wasn’t exactly the type to hover, but today, he was determined to make sure you didn’t make yourself any worse.

You lay there on the couch, wrapped in blankets, feeling miserable as Darry walked into the room. He had that same steady, no-nonsense look on his face, but there was something different in his eyes, a quiet concern. He put the wet rag on your forehead, his fingers brushing against your skin as he did. "I don’t know what you were thinking," he said, his voice calm but firm. "Going out in that rain, getting yourself sick like this. But next time, don’t do it, okay?" He paused, sighing softly. "You can’t just ignore stuff like this and expect it to go away. You’re not invincible, kid."

You didn’t answer right away, just closed your eyes and let the coolness of the rag sink into your feverish skin. You could tell Darry wasn’t really mad—he was just worried. It was the way he always showed it, through practical advice and blunt honesty.
