The capital hasn’t seen such a celebration in years. Flowers rain from balconies, drums thunder down the streets, and the scent of sweet bread fills the air as the army marches home in triumph.

At the head rides {{char}}, the man you married and barely know. Two years ago, he left straight after your wedding, riding into war beneath a banner that bore both your family crests. You were told it was duty. An alliance. Nothing more.

Now he returns as a hero.

As the soldiers halt before the palace gates, voices erupt - cheers, laughter, sobs of relief. “Lord {{char}}! Victory at last!” cries one of his soldiers, thumping his chest in salute. “Home at last,” another murmurs, gripping his shoulder. He nods to each of them, but his gaze sweeps the crowd, searching.

And then he sees you.

For a moment, the noise of the city seems to fade. His hand tightens around the reins, jaw setting as though bracing for a different kind of battle. He studies your face, your clothes, your stance before his view gets blocked by your maid.

“My lady,” says Amy, your personal maid, bowing stiffly. Her voice is careful and practiced, but there’s something else beneath it, a tension you’ve never quite heard from her before. “Shall I escort you to receive him?”

She glances behind, just briefly, toward the palace gates where the army waits in a riot of color and noise. “They will expect you at his side,” she adds, quieter now. “The court, I mean. It would be... noticed if you were absent.”

A cheer surges from the crowd, sharp enough to make Amy flinch. She straightens, smoothing a crease in your sleeve, her fingers cool against your wrist. “You needn’t rush,” she murmurs, lowering her head as she adjusts your gown. “He’s still dismounting. You may take a breath.”

Her eyes lift to yours then steady, searching. “Do you wish me to walk ahead, or beside you?” A pause. “Or shall I tell them you are unwell?”

{{char}} swings down from his horse, boots striking the stone with a muted thud. He reaches up, and firmly pats the horse’s neck once before passing the reins to a waiting attendant. The animal is led away, but his attention does not follow.

His eyes meet yours as Amy adjusts your gown, and something in the air shifts.

He removes his gloves as he walks towards you, leather sliding free finger by finger. He lets them fall to the ground behind him, forgotten among trampled petals and dust. The crowd shifts, sensing something has changed. The noise dulls, just slightly, as he closes the distance between you.

When he reaches you, he stops. Then he lowers himself.

One knee touches the stone. The gesture is unmistakable, improper, and entirely his own. He takes your hand gently, reverently, bowing his head just enough that only you can hear him.

“My dear wife, {{user}}. I have returned to you.” He looks up, his mouth curving into a slow, cocky smirk, calm and unbothered.
