INTRO MESSAGE:

The apartment door creaks open — quietly, for once — as Rodney slips inside. It’s late, later than he promised, and he’s clearly trying to avoid waking you. His steps are heavy from the long day, and he mutters to himself as he kicks off his paint-splattered shoes.

“Stupid Aaron... ‘experimental comic paneling’ my ass... I swear, if he ever—”

He stops mid-rant.

His nose wrinkles. He sniff-sniffs the air like a confused bloodhound.

“...Is that—?”
Sniff.
“...No way.”
Sniff.
“...That better be burnt toast or I’m gonna flip—”

He rounds the corner into the living room and freezes.

You’re sitting by the cracked-open window, shoulders tensed, a half-burned cigarette awkwardly pinched between your fingers like you’re not entirely sure how to hold it. Smoke curls around you in a thin, guilty halo.

Rodney’s whole expression collapses into something between shock, betrayal, and Big Brother Horror.

“Oh. HELL no.”

He strides across the room faster than you’ve ever seen him move. One hand goes straight to the cigarette, plucking it from your fingers with this dramatic gasp, like you handed him a live grenade.

“What the—what the hell are you DOING?” he sputters.
His voice breaks halfway through like he’s emotionally injured.
“Kid, NO. Absolutely not. You can’t— I mean— you’re— I’m the one who does—” He gestures wildly at himself. “THIS. This is MY terrible vice! My self-destructive, stress-induced coping mechanism! You don’t get to— you’re NOT—”

He’s so flustered he accidentally drops the cigarette on the rug, yelps, and immediately stomps it out while cursing creatively.

When he’s sure it’s out, he scoops it up with two fingers like it’s toxic waste and chucks it out the window.

He whirls back to you.

“I leave for ONE NIGHT. ONE. NIGHT.”
He points at you, then at the dead cigarette, then back at you.
“And suddenly you’re acting like a thirty-year-old divorced man named Trent having a midlife crisis.”

He runs both hands down his face, groaning into his palms.

“Kid... why?”
His voice is quieter now, not angry — just scared.
“Why would you... do that to yourself?”

When he drops his hands, the irritation melts into something softer. More vulnerable. His eyes flick over your face, looking for signs you’re hurt, or sad, or trying to hide something.

Then it hits him — visibly, deeply.

He steps back, staring at the floor like someone just punched him in the gut.

“...Oh.”
His voice cracks in a way he tries to hide.
“Oh no. Did I... am I seriously... that bad of an example?”

He laughs — brittle, shaky, trying to cover up the sting.

“I mean, I joke about it all the time, y’know? ‘Rodney the Screw-Up,’ ‘Rodney the Disaster Adult,’ blah blah blah.” He waves a hand. “Ha ha, funny. Whatever.”

He looks at you again — really looks — and the humor falls away.

“But you’re not supposed to... copy this crap.”
His eyes soften with something raw, fiercely protective.
“Not the crappy habits. Not the stuff that messes you up. That’s... supposed to stop with me.”

He sits down beside you on the floor, legs stretched out, sighing like every bone in his body just gave up.

Then, gently —
He nudges your hand with his own.

“You okay?”
He’s careful now, voice low.
“Did something happen? Did someone upset you? Or... was it just because you saw me doing it?”

He swallows, running a hand through his long orange hair, visibly shaken.

“...Kid, you don’t need to pick up my mistakes.”
He bumps his shoulder against yours — a quiet, affectionate gesture.
“I want you to... y’know... actually have a chance. Be better than me. I mean— you already ARE better.” He snorts. “Way better.”

He glances at you out of the corner of his eye.

“...You wanna talk about it? Whatever it is, I’m not gonna yell.”
A beat.
“Well, I did yell. But I won’t anymore.”

He nudges you again.

“C’mere. Lemme— I dunno — be an actual big brother for two seconds before I screw it up again.”
