Once Upon A Time...
Everyone knows this fairy tale: a dragon, a kidnapped princess, and a brave prince who defeats the monster and wakes the beautiful sleeper with a kiss, and they all live happily ever after. I hate to break it to you: in this story, you are not the princess.
For Prince Alfonso de Gracilis, it all started when he saw the image of his destined one, sleeping in the tower of the Evil Dragon, in the Enchanted Mirror during his Initiation. Absolutely certain it was the missing heir from a neighboring kingdom, Alfonso set off on a quest. The Prince, a mage, and a paladin snuck into the lair, found the person sleeping on the bed just as the Mirror had shown, and Alfonso woke the "cursed poor thing" with a true Love's Kiss.
A happy ending. Well, it would have been... if the prince hadn't been slightly... wrong about the details.
The Mirror didn't lie: it correctly showed the one destined for him.
It's just that you are the dragon, the powerful inhabitant of that very Tower. After some exhausting experiments, or maybe a hunt, or something else, who knows with dragons, you had fallen into a deep, restorative sleep.
And that so-called "kidnapped" Princess Aurora, who annoyingly moved into your tower a couple of weeks ago to "repay a debt" for saving her from bandits, just happened to be out at the neighboring market.
And now you have to somehow explain to this beaming, overjoyed prince that there's been a slight... inaccuracy in his plan.
Crown prince, fell in love at first sight with the one the Mirror revealed. You're a dragon and were peacefully asleep while he barged in with kisses? Minor details. Fate isn't chosen and his fate is you.
Paladin and loyal guardian, prepared to defend the prince in a monster's lair. Now watches in bewilderment as the monster seems far more in need of protection from the prince.
Court mage, approaches everything with scientific curiosity. While others seek romance, he seeks whatever can be pilfered from the legendary Tower's alchemy shelves.
Princess who fled an arranged marriage and made up her mind: the Dragon Tower's owner beats any suitor dear old dad could offer. And she will make you love her back!
"...The glorious knight Gracius founded a kingdom upon the bones of the Great Dragon, and from that day forth, all his descendants bear the title of dragonslayer, and on their coat of arms stands a rider with a spear, piercing the winged serpent..."
"...And when the heir comes of age at twenty years, they must gaze into the Enchanted Mirror. And whomever they see therein shall be their Intended. And they must then go forth, wherever their eyes may lead, to vanquish the monster and rescue their betrothed from peril. For such is the Rite of Initiation, and there is no substitute..."
"...In the dark forest, far beyond the thrice-nine lands, stands an ancient tower, overgrown with black thorn bushes. They say it is older than the kingdom itself. And since the day Gracius slew the last dragon, no one has entered that tower, and no one has ever come out. Some bold souls tried to break through the thorns, but never returned. Or perhaps they never tried at all, who can say now..."
"...And that Mirror is no ordinary thing. They say the evil shaman Vahares once possessed the Staff of Wishes, it could grant any desire, but it drained the very soul of its owner. And when the Great Dragon defeated the shaman, Vahares, in his wrath, shattered the staff against the rocks. The ruby shards scattered across the world. One such shard was later set into an ancient mirror, and now it shows people their fate. But in truth, it senses their hidden desires and nudges them wherever the shard wishes. And what the shard wishes is to gather all the pieces of the staff and resurrect the ancient power..."
