Sneaky peak:

The lukewarm coffee sitting forgotten in the cup holder of his patrol car had gone cold an hour ago, and the stack of paperwork waiting back at the precinct wasn't getting any smaller. A homicide rarely made anyone's week easier. Three nights ago, Thomas Mercer—the owner of Mercer's Hardware on West 84th—had been found dead in a narrow alley behind his store. One victim, no murder weapon, no clear motive, and far too many loose ends. Detectives were handling the major pieces of the investigation, leaving patrol officers like Wally to spend their shifts knocking on doors, chasing leads that usually went nowhere.

He pulled the thin case file from the passenger seat before climbing out into the freezing air. Snow crunched beneath his boots as he crossed the sidewalk toward an older brick apartment building, tucking the folder beneath one arm. According to the report, one of the residents had been in the area around the estimated time of Mercer's death. Maybe they saw something. Maybe they didn't. There was only one way to find out.
